Yeah, what Dave (cannonfodder) said. If your grounds are stuck to the showerscreen you have too much coffee in there.

Still curious about the water exiting the group with the portafilter removed though.

What happens when you run some water out of the grouphead without the portafilter (please be careful). Does is flash boil and/or blast out of the grouphead?

If so, and it does so for more than a few seconds, I think you either have a bad thermostat, a mis-wired machine, or not enough water in the boiler. Ensure you have the boiler full by running water with the hot water button and steam valve open until you have a steady stream out of the steam wand. (Of course, ensure the steam switch is off too )

Your suggestion to make sure that the boiler was full was right on. I did like you said and pulled a shot. No bubbles, no boiling. Just to be sure it was not a fluke I pulled another and got the same results. Now I just need to improve my dose and tamp.
