Get water out of Rancilio Silvia for shipping?

Postby tsenfw on Thu Mar 11, 2010 3:24 pm

Do I just run the pump to get all the water out of the boiler? Or is that harmful for the pump?

Shipping to the buyer. I think I'm going to try the double box technique, unless someone can offer any other helpful hints.

You cannot empty the boiler by running the pump.

I hope that another poster will verify or correct the following, but I've shipped a few Silvias this way:

  • Heat up the boiler
  • Remove the water reservoir
  • Open the steam valve
  • Run the pump to get all of the water out of the pump plumbing
  • Close the steam valve
  • Unplug machine
  • Turn the Silvia on its side (steam wand down)
  • Open the steam valve
  • Let pressure and gravity drain the remaining water from the boiler.

If there is a chance of freezing temperatures in transit, fill the boiler with a vodka mixture before starting the drain process.

See Shipping Rancilio Silvia and Preparing Silvia and Rocky for sale? As a rule of thumb, you should double box with enough padding to withstand dropping the package 3-4 times onto a concrete floor from three feet off the ground (no joke).

open the top disconnect one wire to the heating element
lay the machine on her back
open steam valve and position a container under the wand tip
turn water switch on ( middle one)
turn main switch on
as soon as water flows out turn main switch off.
repeat process 2-3 times until all water is out

DOUBLE PACK with 2-3 inches of space of Styrofoam or peanuts between the two boxes
put the machine in a bag so no loose peanuts will go inside the unit
AND INSURED for full value
carrier are merciless

I totally support the double pack. Even if the carrier manages to damage the outside box the peanut layer and the space will make sure that you do not have a dented machine.
