Flat/Convex...why so different? - Page 2

I'm quite open to the possibility that my distribution is off but doing WDT and paying close attention (and again with my experience doing this) my distribution would not have been my first thougt as the source of my problem.

Not saying that it is your distribution, just a general observation on the difference between tampers. You may simply have a machine that favors one type of tamp over another, possibly due to the headspace. My Elektra has a flat shower screen and does not like to be updosed, I think (think being the key word) that it works better with a flat tamp but I have not done any kind of systematic study on the issue, just casual observation.

Either type works fine for me, I don't think either type really matters so long as you are doing everything else right. The convex style may have been created in an attempt to ameliorate deficiencies in the barista, not a problem with flat style tampers. I don't know if that's true, but it seems like most people get a convex in an attempt to "fix" a problem. I think it may be more important to use a tamper that is ergonomically correct for your hand; proper shape and weight.
