Extraction time dependent on coffee?

Postby Teus on Wed Mar 16, 2011 11:41 am

Hello!
I'm experiencing different extraction times for different coffees. Some roasts start to blond after 15 seconds, others after 30 seconds. Processing of the beans is more or less the same. This morning I pulled 3 shots with roast A in 15 seconds, this afternoon I bought different beans B and those extract in 30 seconds. Roast B seemed to compact a bit more when tamping than roast A.

Is this normal?

I'm using these devices, and the finest grind possible:

Yes of course, that is by design. Different coffees extract differently.

alright, so blonding of the extraction should indicate when to stop brewing.
what about aiming at a 25 second extraction time?

25 seconds is just recommendation. You tweak the brew time based on your taste: Espresso 101: How to Adjust Dose and Grind Setting by Taste
