I recently gave up trying to single dose with my Macap MXK. And there really is no need to use PVC pipe or any other mini hopper, because the gigantic one is very easy to use. So I in the morning I toss up to a pound of beans in the hopper. After pulling shots and finishing my coffee session, usually later in the day, I push the slider in and remove the hopper. Holding the throat of the hopper over the empty coffee bag or container, I pull back the slider and the beans neatly exit back into the bag. The remaining beans in the top of the grinder are removed by a few handfuls, leaving a few ( mainly broken ) beans which I then grind and discard.

Same here, I have abandoning the single dose and back to stock hopper.
It's more a hassle I think. This is the same iteration from others experience.
IMO the major appeal for single dose is the convenience to switching between different beans.
Since I don't roast my own bean and I have to buy in 1 lb quantity, no incentive to do so.
Again the best thing to say is to try each options and decide which is the best. :-)
my sole obsession : "to make espresso that everybody loves" NOT "to make everybody loves my espresso"

+1 to Steve and Yose. There's not much point to modifying the stock hoppers and grinders for single dosing if you're using the same beans for long stretches, especially since timing the grind works so well as an alternative to weighing the beans.

For myself, the experimentation is a big part of the enjoyment. Starting this morning, I've ground a bunch of shots using three different blends at different doses for espresso, plus another SO for pour-over. So I'm kind of stuck in the weigh-grind/weigh-grind thing, since emptying and refilling hoppers and grinding through sets of remainders that many times isn't exactly a great lifestyle.

But when a single bean is the order of the day, single dosing can take a vacation for me too.

The issue I have with a stock hopper is the finger guard setup. With the PVC, I can scoop out the unground beans easily without making a mess. Whenever I would remove the hopper, there would always be beans that fell out of the grinder throat because the slider is above the lip of the throat. I know, it's a minor inconvenience, but for me, the PVC works better. I can easily switch beans (which I often do because my wife likes caps) and not have much waste.
