That's interesting that you prefer to keep the wand vertical. I'm using the same four-hole wand on my Anita, and I get the best results by pointing the wand out from the machine at an angle and placing the tip near the right hand side of the pitcher with the pitcher tilted slightly towards me. Surf the tip just under the surface until it expands a bit and starts feeling warm to the touch, then lower the tip a tiny bit and let it swirl until the pitcher is too hot to touch. Voila, great microfoam pretty much every time.

Still, if pointing the wand straight down works for you, that's all that matters. I don't think there's any one right answer. Just find something that works for you and stick with it.

Mine doesn't "work" at all. The Promac is the most difficult steamer I have ever used. I have a 2 hole tip I am going to try and modify but I am not excited about it at all. It has a huge boiler, four hole tip, plenty of steam and no foam. I have tried tipping it, different pitchers, less steam, praying and nothing seems to work well. The best I got was just below the surface and then up and down about a .75" (from the manual) and it still sucked.
On my Pavoni lever (with a double switch) I can make micro foam effortlessly in any quantity I have tried. It will do soy milk just as well also. I am wondering about modifying the Promac to receive a Pavoni steam arm...
Otherwise, I may just have to fire up the Pavoni just for the foam. :|
