Given I just recently got a new machine and grinder, I was not sure at all how long it would take me to go through a lb of coffee. Well, now I know as I basically plowed through it in about 4-5 days. Granted, I used quite a bit doing some grinder tweaking and such, but still surprised how quickly it went out. So I'm guessing I'm going to go through about a lb/week. I guess I'll buy a couple of lb every other week??

How often do you buy and how much at one time? Do you consistently go through pretty much the same amount week after week? Just curious.........

I'm jealous of your mini vivaldi! Hope you enjoy having it!

I'm currently going through 1lb per week. Since I'm on break right now, I've been getting bags from barefoot, four barrel, or blue bottle coffee. When I go back to school, I'm gonna have to order online since there's no decent roasters where my Uni is. I usually buy 2 weeks worth of coffee.

I've bought from Paradise, Verve, Blue Bottle, Four Barrel, Barefoot

I use 3oz of beans a day. That equates to 4 18gm shots a day. I buy two 12oz bags from Counter Culture a week (roughly because that order lasts 8 days). I will usually freeze one bag's worth while using the other.

Once you dial things in you'll find that you aren't plowing through coffee as much.

I usually buy through gocoffeego or roaste or CCC in amounts to save on shipping from a given roaster (3-4 12oz packages at a time). Then store in Ball jars in the freezer and take out as I need them - each standard ball jar holds enough for a few days (2 drinkers around 2 drinks a day each)

You will find that you plow through coffee even more. It's hard to stop when you get more good results than sink shots. Beware... your coffee consumption will increase :)

Well, it sounds like my ordering will have to either double in frequency or in amount as I guess when things settle down I will be doing 4-5 shots/day. That is roughly the same amount you are consuming as I only use about 15 grm/shot now.

How do you go about freezing the beans? I thought that refrigeration/freezing was discouraged as t adds a tons of moisture to the coffee once it thaws. My wife has a bunch of those ball jars here since she does a lot of things from scratch in the kitchen and then freezes or stores for later. I guess I could use a couple if I knew how it is recommended.

I just dump them in the Ball jars and then put in the freezer. For thawing I just make sure to thaw them slowly with the lid still on (take out when my hopper is nearing the bottom) such that extra moisture is not added to the system. Some blow into the container to decrease the O2 content in the jar - I'd be shocked if anyone could tell the difference between with or without this "washout".

Lots of discussion on pros and cons of freezing but I don't really taste a significant difference (although we primarily drink milk-based drinks which would mask some problems). Again with my buying habits the longest they stay in the freezer is probably 6 weeks and I still get tons of crema.

Have fun with the mini! Great machines.

Oh - forgot to mention that I'm in triple basket heaven so dosing more like 18-19g/shot. My wife still does about 15 as she gets the shakes with more. Naked PF with the triple is awesome.

I bought a case of these: http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_011W117181110001P?rioptype=KC&i_cntr=1325108792497 and use a jar a day.

Freezing doesn't affect the taste at all. That's been proven time and again. The only thing about freezing is you need to keep the beans frozen. In most home freezers, there is a defrost function that warms the freezer and that may affect the beans. For that I bought this: http://www.meijer.com/s/haier-hcm050ec-5-cu-ft-freezer-with-removable-basket/_/R-184361

*note, the websites listed are not where I bought mine from, they just showed up when I searched the item.

I used to go to a local place that claimed to roast on site but there was little evidence that they actually did, and they could never specify the actual roast date of beans I purchased from their hoppers.

There is another place 45 minutes away (caffe pronto, now called ceremony coffee) that I would purchase from when I was in annapolis, but that was not often, so the majority of the time I was using local mystery beans. Shipping costs were holding me back from internet orders, but then I signed up for automatic monthly shipments with caffe pronto and the accompanying 10% discount almost covers shipping. I get 5 lbs per month in the mail the day after roasting, divide it up among glass jars, and freeze. This amount lasts me a little over a month so after a few months I cancel, wait a while, then re-sign up. I usually label the jar with the name of the blend, the roast date, and the freeze date.
