Bottomless dark pull

Postby sadams on Tue Mar 01, 2011 5:20 pm

Besides being long and loud this pull starts from the center and then moves to the edges. Mine always start from the edge and move in. This pull also looks very dark for quite awhile and then very good striping before blonding. Is this the sign of a great grinder, or ???

Tim Eggers could probably answer that. :) From personal experience, extractions starting at the edges and moving inwards, or "doughnut" extractions, can be caused by over dosing and crushing the puck on the dispersion screen. Simple test.. lock the pf, unlock the pf. Is there any impression in the dry puck?

I have been dosing to about 19 grams in a triple basket and that passes the nickel test so I think there is enough head space.

*shrug* The extraction in the video beaded evenly enough for me.

Even distribution and correct dose are the top contributors to an even extraction; a great grinder increases the margin of error. I could be wrong, but the flow in the video appeared to be slower from the edges than the center; the flow looked less viscous than I would expect. That's the risk of "eye cupping". Better to confirm by taste. If there was center channeling, the body would be reduced, sourness/blah would increase.
