Best Barista Training Videos

Postby innermusic on Mon Nov 14, 2011 3:34 pm

For grinding, dosing, distribution, etc. straight shots... can you point to your favorites? There are so many out there it's confusing... watching really experienced baristas doing stuff I would not do! (like smacking the side of the PF a couple of times with the tamper after a first tamp. Looking for good close viewing of good technique.

I have a thread in the FAQ's with links to a bunch of videos along with several videos I did just for the post. You may want to look it over if you have not already.

Thanks - those are really good videos, especially the last series. Did you make those? This site should probably have a link from the main page to see stuff like that. If one picture is worth a thousand words, then one video is worth a bunch more. OTOH all of them are dealing with dosing in what is probably the 20g plus range. I would love to see some videos of distribution techniques using 14-18g doses, which is by far the range I use most often.

While I find competition videos interesting, they are rarely if ever videoed close enough. Also, the technique is geared for speed as well as perfection.

It's geared for perfection, and speed comes with practice. I learned a fair amount from competition videos, but definitely not if you don't have the basics down. Also there is more than meets the eye in the competition videos. For example, you must start the brew immediately after locking in the portafilter or else you are penalized. I've seen a lot of people's videos where the portafilter w/ coffee is just sitting in the group for way too long.
