Approach for Improving Distribution with Clumping Grinders

Postby doppio_s on Sat May 19, 2007 3:19 pm

I've recently tried a new technique to improve dosing and distribution with my Mazzer Mini E, which, as others have noted, produces a somewhat clumpy grind. I've been using the WDT (which did improve things), but was never quite happy with the eveness of extraction or volume before blonding. Now, instead of grinding directly into the PF, I grind into a container, cover it tightly and then shake it moderately to break up clumps. I then gently dump the coffee into the PF, with the yogurt container, and proceed with the WDT, distribute, tamp and go. The dose seems fluffier and more even. The extraction is markedly more even and goes longer before blonding. I thought I'd toss it out there to see if anyone else might benefit from this approach. Apologies if this has already been covered before and also due respect to those who advocate simplifying their grind/dose/distribute/tamp routine. This has been working well for me.

Sounds similar to the technique described here by Mr. Brown. I've tried it and found it useful, but after a mishap that resulted in coffee going everywhere I never went back.

I've used a similar method for years with Rocky doser aka grinds dispenser. The doser breaks up most of the clumping and then while don't cover and shake the canister simply shake it side to side before pouring grounds into PF. I believe it's why I've never felt the need to use WDT or similar methods. Canister also conveniently pours grinds for any other brewing method too of course.
