Just got a call from the chrome plater here in Zurich. They want 3,700 USD for only the large parts.

Does anybody have some comparison what chrome plating should cost (picture of the parts is on the previous page)?

Off my the top of my head it would (to me) seem an excess on their part.
But many factors have to be considered eg: local wages, energy costs and such.

I have read many posts by Paul Pratt - HB's own restaurateur par excellence - where he has done this type of chrome work on quite a few vintage machines, with excellent results.

Maybe he'll chip in or you could send him a PM asking what he thinks of the US$3,7K figure you were quoted.
You could also ask him if he guy he uses in downtown HK would accept a job from abroad.

I have the dea that you could do it for much less by sending it out of Germany to get it done, just have to find a proper and reliable outfit to do it.

Good luck + cheers,

Is a little hard to compare apples for apples but I'd have expected less (or no more) than £1,000, and UK's not a cheap place to get things done.

thanks, I feel better now. The quote I got was 3700 US only for the large panel parts. He didn't calculate all the small parts yet, so the total may be closer to 5000. I will pick up the parts tomorrow and start looking for a chrome plater outside Switzerland.

Would be happy to drive a bit and combine it with a weekend trip, so if anyone knows a good place (in southern Germany, Southern France or Northern Italy) please let me know!

Hi Til,
I had nothing rechromed on my machines, yet - but I was looking for a reliable company to do so a while ago.
What I found was this:
http://www.brinkmann-chrom.de/default.asp
The site looks pretty cool and their work impressive - but I haven't been testing them out.
Maybe you give them a call?

Good luck,
Holger

I am paying similar to Derek in the UK and that takes into account that I give the chrome platers worked over pieces, i.e. I have removed all dents, squared up edges, removed vice grip marks, brazed holes etc....

Til,

Southern France has a vintage coffee machines restorer... and he has his chrome plater.

If in case ;)

Wow !! I don't remember, if it is chrome I probably had it done. If stainless steel I made myself.
