Two things come into play here: precision, and handling. VST, Breville, and IMS (there may be others), are very precise in terms of even hole spacing and perfectly round holes. In my opinion, precision is an overblown characteristic, and has mostly second order effects on shot quality. VST however has something else that distinguishes it from the others, and that is more "hole area"... So it has less resistance to flow, and will require a finer grind to hit your times, in comparison to the others. This is neither good nor bad, just different. This characteristic also makes it popular among baristas who like to both "overdose", AND grind fine, which might cause a choker in a basket with more typical flow characteristics. I keep both VST and Breville baskets around in my "barista toolbox", to use as the situation calls for.
