I went springless to solve the uneven extractions I was getting from my 14 year old Mazzer Mini E prototype. Clumps would fall down the back of the funnel while the fines would fall down the front of the funnel.
I pulled the spring but leave the basket in the portafilter and turn the basket as the grinds fall into the basket. It works wonders for the distribution of fines. A few taps to even the grinds out and then tamping is all that is needed to get shots consistently even with a Strada basket.
