Carbon Filter versus Sediment Filter

What's the difference between using 10 micron carbon block filter and 1 micron sediment filter? Chris Coffee suggests that the sediment filter reduces water turbidity.

Chris Coffee recommends placing the softener filter before the carbon block filter, as the carbon filter provides the final polish of the water and eliminates cat-ion crystals from entering the machine. This begs the question: assuming that 1 micro should be added to the softener and carbon block, what order should they follow? Softener-Carbon Blocker-Sediment filter? Or Sediment-Softener-Carbon Blocker?

I would put the sediment filter first to clean up the garbage (the sediment) so that it doesn't clog either the softener or the carbon.

Second run the softener and finally the carbon to polish and remove the softener products as Chris said.

I would put a 5 micron string wound sediment filter before your softener if you are on well water. Generally not necessary for municipal. Then do your cartridges as follows:

Softener>Carbon>Sediment

If you shop around for various carbon filters (doesn't need to be espresso specific), even carbon block or briquette, you may notice the disclaimer that the filter may release carbon fines into the water stream. The sediment filter removes these. Beats having them in the machine/espresso.

Absolute Espresso says
for espresso machine
Pre filter first 5 to 10 micron, Carbon filter second, Chlorine taste & Odor 0.5 to 1 micron, Softer last
or a Cuno 4 stage 124T or 124BM-T depending on water hardens.for heavy usage a 5 micron 10 inch pre filter :)
