What is the proper way to pronounce "doppio" in Italian? One dictionary I consulted said it is pronounced like dop-pee-oh. Another dictionary stated it is pronounced dopyoh (one syllable essentially). Very frustrating

The way I've heard it, if you spend twice is along on the "do" than the "pio" and you'll be fine no matter how you divide the time between the "pi" and the "o"

If you combine the second way you wrote it with what Jim said then you've got the basics for how to emphasize the syllables. To hear how it sounds, click the arrow in this link:

Thanks guys, that was very helpful. I noticed in the recording that the speaker pronounced every letter, although it was a bit subtle with the ending letters. Maybe that is why dictionaries have some difficulting with pronounciation keys.

Imagine a hip-hop gangsta-wannabe telling his friend, Trevor, in the mall that he reeelly likes the new MP3 player at the Sharper Image.
"That's really dope, yo!"
OK, sorry about that imagery. Now try to forget it... ; >
