No problem Rob. For those who I contacted about this a few days ago, there's no longer a need to respond with an "I accept" or "No, thanks."

This is a busy weekend for most. And not sure many can spend much time playing the game :( . Guess I wish there was a better way to solve this as some great candidates are dropping out and there has not been much activity with the new solution. I spun the wheel once and with all I have to do that will be it. With the time I will visit HB I'd rather spend it reading or replying to new posts. Dan, I do understand this was a tough one to solve but it appears much wind has left our sails. Well lots of roasting to do today and it's time to get to it :D .

No, Rob, not directed at anyone.

As I didn't enter the original contest, I'd have prefered a simple draw.

Forcing me to enter is a punishment, not a reward  and I won't enter

What can I say, you can't please everyone. If someone can't take one minute to post on a thread, I don't think they're a good candidate for a project requiring more fortitude.

It's not the first time I've heard this comment. With the holidays quickly approaching, a few people contacted me offline for purchasing advice. When I pointed out that several grinders were being given away that were much better than the ones they were considering, some said "I don't have the time." OK, you have the time to write me, expect a personalized response, ask for further clarification of my initial thoughtful reply, complain my recommendations are too expensive, and then say you can't be bothered with entering a contest? More and more my answer to such e-mails is simple: Post in the forum if you need advice, you'll get a more rounded response than asking me. Guess what? Some reply in a huff they don't want to spend the time to register and post. Oh bother!

This year the odds of winning a prize worth several hundred dollars was 43 to 1 (i.e., there were nine Gifts and a total of 383 entrants). In prior years, the odds were closer to 30 to 1. And yet thousands of visitors didn't bother entering. Maybe they don't like the selection of prizes? Or are so wealthy that it doesn't matter to them? Last year 13% responded that they were not interested. Go figure.

Humbug indeed! Here we have proof positive of the axiom "no good deed goes unpunished."

I am not sure why many are withdrawing or not participating at all. Ed, you have a good number with your original entry and are still in the lead. This is a prize that would be an honor to win and fun to work on.

If I were to somehow win I would certainly ask for blending help from the other members.

So, get back into this contest!

I quit the music and film biz when I had more computers than musicians in the studio. c. 1988

Currently there are 7 players, which isn't really all that bad considering that only ~30 members qualify. Then again, this is the last shopping weekend before Christmas, it's a busy time of year, etc., so an extension may help increase participation. Since Monday is traditionally the busiest day on the site, I've extended the contest until tomorrow at midnight EST. I promise this will be the last tweak of the rules.

Well I looked at the MVP scores, and mine's a freakin' 9.

I don't know how I got a NINE, but all I can say is, I want to make money. I've got this thing and it's freakin' golden, and I'm just not giving it up for freakin' nothing. I'm not gonna do it. And I can always use it.

After this post, my MVP will probably go down.

Congratulations Andy, it's a well-deserved 9. :D

That said, I've been tweaking the algorithm a lot over the past two weeks. It's based on several different metrics and your individual MVP score is relative to the rest of the membership. So don't get too full of yourself, the big uptick in your score occurred when I removed Team HB from the normalization calculations. :P

Yeah, and once the gonkulator was added to the fillaramie pakalomer, divided by the mishigas, and placed on a bed of rice it's all working like a finely tuned avocado.

Don't worry, Dan, my post WAS meant to be facetious. Why should the Governor of Illinois be the only one to get in on the action?

(And since we're talking, how much do I have to pay you to up my MVP score to 10?)

Mine jumped from 6 to 9. Methinks Dan must have learnt math in the LAUSD.
Using VALUE of post, if you're a 9, I'm a 3. Perhaps it should be MPP for Most Prolific Posters.

Dark side of the MVP rating for those that value it :
    » encourages over posting
» discourages candor via subtle psychological encouragement to be a team player
» gives false credibility to idiotic posts

It should be a profile option, just like email and PM buttons.
