"Log me on automatically each visit" stopped working

Offer your ideas on how to improve the site or report site problems.

I don't use the Log me on automatically each visit option, but apparently it stopped working recently. I have failed to find a modification that could have prompted this unwanted behavior going back from now through July. My tests show that Internet Explorer V6 doesn't "forget" about the setting session to session. Firefox, which I greatly prefer, sometimes remembers the past login right away, sometimes the past login is immediately recognized after clicking the Login link, other times the prior login is completely forgotten.

Jim Schulman, who tromps through quite a few phpBB-based boards, reports that many have the same problem. My searches for previous reports of the support forums invariably pointed to cookie-handling at the client's browser as the source of the problem ("Clear your browser's cookies, confirm you don't have them blocked from the site or blocked by some spyware/adware/anti-virus program, then restart" is the common refrain). Would those who are having this problem post a summary of the symptoms, timeframe when you first noticed the problem, and browser?

UPDATE: Try clearing your browser cache, browser cookies, removing history, and using "www" in front of the link like this: http://www.home-barista.com/forums/ (not home-barista.com/forums/).

Dan, any idea why I now have to manually log in each visit, despite clicking the autologin feature?

HB @ Thu 09:48 pm:
Dogshot, you're the second person who's reported auto-login problems. I don't know, my guess is the "remember unread posts" modification broke it. I'll look into it.

cannonfodder @ Fri 03:06 pm:
auto log on has not worked for me for about a week but my HD went boom.

Auto-login has been acting strange for me as well, and only just this week. I use Firefox 1.0.x at the office, 1.5.x at home, and occasionally IE6 at an odd machine. I can't say that I have seen the issue with IE yet, as I don't hardly ever use it (although, I like some of the IE7 things so far).

I think I may have even been "forgotten" on a refresh once. I restarted Firefox once this evening and it remembered me, so it seems sporadic.

I'll be more diligent in noting the particulars the next few days.

I run IE6 on three different laptops. Same problem on each. I noticed it about a week ago. My laptop HD went on vacation so I am running on a virgin install OS. I just chucked it up to a cookie setting I have not had a chance to look at.

Microsoft has released a slew of updates in the past two weeks. This may be a side effect of a hotfix. I have applied all the current updates and HF's on all of my machines so I don't have a non patched machine to try it from.

Any Mac folks out there (or linux/UNIX)? Do you have the same problem or is this an isolated Microsoft issue.

I also use Firefox, which I believe I updated 5 days ago, possibly around the same time I started to experience the problem. It is also sporadic with me, although it is rare that it remembers me.

Dan, this thread gives me some reassurance that you are not using new technology to subtly 'cull the herd'.

I'll try the recommended fixes and report back.

Worked for me 100% until a few days ago. Now I have to manually log on at least once per day.

I think the changes I applied for converting the article static content to php pages may have been at fault; I've backed off some of the changes and auto-login works consistently for me now with Firefox and IE V6. Have you tried again after clearing your browser's cookies and using http://www.home-barista.com/forums/? You should see a cookie named home-barista_bbs_data, and another called home-barista_bbs_sid when you're logged in. There's a few others that are used to keep track of your unread posts.

It's started working for me again after I cleared the old cookies.

Is that like sweeping out the old grinds from the doser??

At least it was not another 503 error, knock on a wood portafilter handle.

Too much so, alas; each cookie crumb sweep works only once. However, as far as bugs go, this one is really tiny, and probably not worth the effort to track down.

Moved from the Announcements... I am guessing that the spontaneous log outs are related to the auto-logins not working correctly. I've switched back and forth between auto-login / not auto-login the last couple days without incident, but I clear cookies frequently using Firefox's Options > Privacy > Cookies > Settings > Clear private data when closing Firefox (Ask me first).

If you gentlemen continue to see it and note a reproducible sequence, please let me know so I can track it down. Thanks...

I keep getting involuntarily logged out - any idea why? Question

HB @ Sun 03:17 pm:
Jon, my guess is clearing cookies and restarting your browser should fix it.

mogogear @ Sun 04:39 pm:
I was also getting kicked off each time, I did as Dan suggested and Wa La !! After deleting my Full cookie box and clearing out my history file, I stayed on this time. He does know what he is talking about !!

Dan-

I was still having troubles.... I just upgraded to Firefox 2.0 and IE 7, cleared cookies, and so far so good. I'll let you know if problems reappear.

Still seems broken. In Firefox 2.0, after clearing cache, cookies, etc., it still forgets me sometimes, so auto login works sometimes, but not always... haven't even turned the machine off. Also, I was just logged out a moment ago while browsing the lever forums.

Not sure if this will help, but I upgraded to the latest version of phpBB last night, which has some session management fixes to address spontaneous logouts.

Thanks Dan... while automatic login was still flaking out a little bit, it wasn't too very often (and better after the server migration or upgrade I think)... I will see if it is improved.
