I want a bigger font

Postby bobdc on Wed Nov 21, 2007 3:13 pm

Would really appreciate if HB would increase the font size at the home page's "latest forum topics" on the left. Granted my eyes are not as they used to be but the rest of the site is fine. However, to read the listing of latest forum topics I usually need to make the font larger. I suspect that type could grow a little without disrupting the integrity of the page. Thanks

The original stylesheet had a mix of fonts specified in pixels and points (and probably a few ems). A few weeks back I normalized them to the same size specification so the "larger font" keys on browsers like Firefox would work correctly (FYI, for Firefox, Ctrl+ = larger font, Ctrl- = smaller font, Ctrl+0 (zero) = default). I've bumped the 'latest topics' font up 1 point.

PS: The recent topics link shows the same content using the forum's layout. Its fonts are much bigger than the home page's sidebar.

Thanks for the 'up'grade. I just checked it out and it reads well for me and looks in conformity as well.

In my opinion, the size of the font in the message screens could be increased, too.

As an amateur web designer, I think it looked better before and was consistent with the visual hierarchy, but oh well. The "Latest topics" on the home page is really meant for first time visitors, not regular use. You may find the recent topics or RSS feed more convenient. Both Firefox and Internet Explorer have built-in handling of RSS feeds. Just look for this symbol and click on it:

There is an RSS feed per forum and site-wide.

It really depends on your monitor. I have a large high resolution monitor with high DPI and fonts on some sites look like fly droppings. As a guideline, I follow the font size choices of major sites like CNN. If you use Firefox, it's easy to bump the font size up and down with a keystroke. This comes in handy when I switch between the 15.4" / 1900 pixels and 14" / 1400 pixels displays.

It's no help now, but the next version of phpBB uses CSS and comes out of the box with three user-controlled font sizes (small, medium, large). I will upgrade the site to it sometime next year (it's still in release candidate status).

Want a bigger font? One that will get you noticed. You CAN be the envy of your neighbors with Fontagra.
Available only through your keyboard and HTML coding, Fontagra is not for everyone. Those with small screens or handheld devices should not use Fontagra. If your bigger font lasts longer than eight hours, consult a graphic designer as soon as possible. Italics and underlining should be avoided when using Fontagra. Women who are trying to become pregnant should not use Fontagra as it can cause objects to appear larger than they actually are in real life. "Fontagra- when <FONT Size="3"> is just not enough!"

Ha! Looking at it again on another monitor (1400x1050 pixels, 14.1") versus a larger one (1900x1200 pixels, 15.4"), I still think it looks better as it was before. It's the same font size as the sub-navigation bar in the forums. For those straining their eyes, why not use the recent topics page or the RSS feed? Or use Firefox's View > Text Size > Increase. I've switched it back so you can try these alternatives.

Guess espresso isn't the only thing we're picky about...

To be honest, there aren't a lot of new features in the 3.0 release that are "must haves." Bookmarks are nice, CSS would be welcome (it includes a built-in set of larger font choices), some nice searching options. But the majority of the new features seem geared towards managing hostile boards (banning, moderated posting, reporting violations, spam control, etc.). Thankfully HB doesn't have those problems, so I struggle to find justification for the many weekends it would require to migrate (mostly the "look" and custom code).
