Found 'View unanswered posts"! Duh!

Postby espressme on Sat Nov 28, 2009 1:33 pm

After yea many years I noticed, finally, that there is a "View unanswered posts" click situated above and to the left of the Announcements window on the "Forums" page.
http://www.home-barista.com/forums/
That that find has taken me longer than it even took to find the "subscribe/ unsubscribe topic" at the bottom of the Related Topics window at the bottom of a thread is a shame.
Slow learner, but learn I do!
Happy Holidaze to all!

I'd never noticed that either. On a similar note, a link that it took me a while to find, but that I love is the one that allows you to view all the threads that have changed since you last logged in. Dan made reference to it in a thread a year ago or so or I would have never found it. I now have it bookmarked and click on it more than any other bookmark. I probably should be ashamed of how often the response is "no suitable matches were found." I guess I'm addicted to HB. I can't remember how you find it exactly, but I think you need to be registered with the website and then I think it is an advanced search option. In any event if anyone is interested the link comes up for me as...

I use the "View Unread Posts" tab, which gives you all of the threads that have been updated or new since your last login.

For lurkers who may be wondering what they're talking about, more features are available to logged in members. For example, the "View unread posts" and "Mark forums read" link at the top-right of the index page:

View unread posts • recent topics • recent posts • Mark forums read

These two links allow you to browse those topics you haven't read since your last visit. You can mark a given forum read or all forum topics read. If you're in the middle of a long thread and don't have time to finish, you can also mark the thread unread at a given post (see the "Mark post as unread" link to the right of each post below the poster's name).

It's a bit dated, but Lurkers describes other features that only logged in members are shown. Some features are hidden for performance reasons, some are hidden for improved search results (e.g., by default, the poster's equipment in their profile isn't shown below their name because it may give search engines "false positives", leading to poor quality search results).

You're welcome! Here's a couple more tidbits that may not be widely know.

The "recent topics" link works differently for logged in members. It combines the "View unread posts" functionality and a topics listing. So, for example, if you've been away for a few days and want to see only what topics have updated recently, try the recent topics link instead of unread posts (it can get rather lengthy). All recently updated topics (read or unread) are shown, with highlighting on those topics you haven't read yet.

Or if you prefer to browse by forum, clicking on the little yellow sticky Image will go to the first unread post of a thread. Or you can start reading from the first post, then once you've refreshed your memory, continue at the first unread one by clicking the "First unread post" link on the top-right of the thread.

The recent posts link shows a summary of the last few day's worth of posts. If you're looking for a specific post and want a larger chunk of text, try search with Return first: set to "all available characters". That option hits the database rather hard, but products a full-text summary of all posts matching your search criteria, but with quotes/images stripped out. It's handy if you're looking for a specific reference, but not sure what to search on... you can then search within results using the entry field at the top-left of the results window.

Whew, that's enough for now... :D

Hello Dan,
Thank you for the more efficient browsing info. That is one of the reasons I like this Group, helpful and ..Understanding. I am still learning features of BBs that I have been active on for years! :?
I have printed out this thread and will be trying the features out.
