A lot has been written on the Mazzer Mini, including the detailed review on CoffeeGeek, but since it is quite significantly different from the doser model, I'd be most interested in seeing a review of the Mazzer Mini E...

It shares the same burr set as the Super Jolly, so its grind performance is well known. There's a few consumer reviews on CG that compare it to the Mazzer Mini, notably Chas Rimpo's. I'll ask Chris' Coffee about sponsoring the addition of the Mini E to the existing grinder writeup.
I take it that the dual boiler PID machine that Chris is working on will be subjected to a HB review? Including a comparison to the S1 and Brewtus I hope?

As I mentioned in the Bench forum, Abe will review the Expobar Brewtus. He owns a Brewtus and Whole Latte Love has loaned me one, so you can expect to hear a lot about it in the coming weeks. Chris' new offering will get the same tag-team treatment.

Just a note of thanks for all the work that has gone into and continues to go into this site, both main HB site and forum. The caliber of information is without equal IMO. It is the number one place I refer people who want to learn about espresso and my number one resource in furthering my espresso journey.

Though it can also be a rather dangerous place to hang out! :wink:

I would second what the others have said - this is an extraordinary site. I like that the forums allow novices like myself to interact with very experienced home baristas or professionals. The articles are a wealth of information that I've read and reread. At this point, I would really like to see a barista grind, dose, distribute, tamp, repeat; I'd like to taste the mythical god shot, or see a ristretto oozing out of a bottomless PF. Which brings me to my suggestion.

The one element that you might consider is a regional forum that allows people in the same general area to interact. For example, is there a great coffee roaster or coffee shop in Sacramento? What coffee events are coming up in the area? Perhaps someone in the area has PID'd a Silvia and wouldn't mind helping someone else. This forum could provide a local flavor. You may have already thought of this (and perhaps the membership distribution by region wouldn't support it), but I wanted to throw it out.

One other suggestion that just came to mind: Events calendar. This might very well be on HB already, but I haven't seen it.

Regardless, it's a great site and I sincerely appreciate all of the work that you and the others put into this!

This site officially started in February 2005 with only articles and the forums opened in late April with the intent of serving a "niche" of espresso enthusiasts. Some might call this audience "serious" or "hard core." The label isn't important; what is important is the quality and focus of the discussions must distinguish themselves from other venues. A part of that strategy is keeping the site's forum list short.

HB is based on phpBB, which supports private "opt in" forums. The forums you see today are public to all; using groups to define access to special interest areas could allow (for example) one logged in member to see the regional forum for their country while guests don't see it at all. Special interest opt-in forums are definitely a consideration for the future, however my gut feeling is that it's too early in the site's maturation. My principle concern is to avoid a perception of poor data/noise ratio.

Hi Dan,

Glad to see the site is doing so well. From my perch on the outside traffic seems to be increasing and the discussions are still great.

One subject that could be addressed, maybe in an article by someone knowledgeable, is thermometry (if that is the right word). Meaning a discussion of the various temperature sensor technologies (thermistor, tc, rtd, others?) including relative accuracy, response times, best technology for a given application (brew temp or boiler temp or roasting bean temp or whatever), probe configurations, how to combine sensor with appropriate meter in terms of response/sampling rate, resolution etc.

I may just be projecting here, as I have been trying to get a handle on all of this over the past month or so and the issue has probably taken on an exaggerated importance in my mind, but it strikes me that this would be a useful discussion so that everyone attempting a given measurement can start on the same page.

Good suggestion! I wonder if there's a chance of convincing Greg 'thermofilter' Scace to author it? He's posted explanations elsewhere (probably alt.coffee, sorry can't find them at the moment) and they were definitely enlightening.

I am new here and I have been searching for a long time to find an impressum, an email adress, or just a contact to send an email to. So I use the forum now to get in contact with the site owner.

When searching for naked portafilter pics I found your site.
Sorry - first I should introduce myself.
My name is Joey, and went from a hobby barista a long stony road to a shop owner.
My shop is in Vienna - the city that has a lot of coffee houses but not much good coffee.
This I wanted to change. So I offer my guests more then 50 single origins, 5 homemade blends and some other good stuff to drink.
As a SCAE member I recently made the trainer certification to train baristas who have at least been working in the coffee business for 3 months (or more of course) to Barista Level 1 - to set European wide standards. Now I am just preparing my scripts for the lessons, but I don't have any pictures from "what happens if a shot goes wrong".
Therefore I wanted to ask you if I may use your pics of the naked PF just for my scripts that I would hand out for the lessons.
I would of course write the copyright name on them and will put your link on the link list.
Please send me an email if this is possible or not. I might use these pics in a bigger resolution as on the web for printing, if you still have them digital.
