Espresso Manual Repository

Postby erics on Thu Nov 23, 2006 10:58 am

I would like to suggest a section on the site for "Espresso Machine Manuals". There are many instances of people buying machines (used) where the original documentation has been lost or misplaced OR a "more better" manual than that produced by the OEM is readily available.

While in some cases the original manual may not be available, an illustrated parts, hydraulic, and electrical diagram could prove invaluable to the new owner.

Certainly I would be more than happy to contribute re the Rancilio Silvia.

I think this might be a good idea, but a few comments/concerns:

2 of the 4 manuals I have for my espresso machines are about worthless as far as operating instructions go (schematics not withstanding). Poorly translated Italian, and I think the Italian was lacking anyhow.

I think we should be sure to NOT post updated operating instructions made by a reseller unless the reseller consents. I know many vendors offer as an incentive improved operating manuals if you purchase from them. I think an HB sponsor or two here does that.

Finally, I wonder if there is an legal reason that might prevent it... I would hope not.

They tend to frown on republishing copyrighted materials without proper approval and/or compensation.

Dave - I agree wholeheartedly with your comments re the republishing of copyrighted material. I would personally obtain written approval from the source prior to engaging in that adventure. For sure there is loads of info on the operation of espresso machines that is subjective but, by the same token, there is lots that is not.

J - I am aware of improved instructions for three specific machines from sources other than the OEM - I would like to think there are others I am not aware of. And yes, if something is copyrighted, then that requires a consent to republish.

I just think that a well written set of instructions clearly stating where one COULD deviate would be beneficial to everyone.

If the copyright owner has a downloadable copy, it would be very easy to put links to it in Espresso Gear's FAQs and Favorites. That and the Resources page is how I keep track of a lot of good links.

Oki Doki -

Here are two Canadian espresso websites that contain machine manuals:

http://www.espressotec.com

http://www.coffeecrew.com

I am under the impression, perhaps incorrect, that Canadian laws with regards to republishing documents may be a little less stricter than US laws.

PS - It is actually just happenstance that I came across the coffeecrew website as I was searching HB for the La Cimbali diagrams that Jeff had linked to about a month or so ago. I searched using "la cimbali schematics" and "la cimbali diagrams" to no avail and then finally did a search for "M32 Bistro" and voila. What also caught my eye on the coffeecrew site is that they have a "Dave" who is also doing a review of the Gaggia Achille.

Eric-

I do not see the M32 as a download there... can you point me to it? I actually hosted that diagram from my own copy.

The espressotec site I have used several times for Rancilio parts... good one.

BTW, do you have any particular interest in the M32?

Jeff - you're the second one to think I meant that coffeecrew had the M32 diagrams - my fault - I need to write a little more clearly. The first person PM'ed me and I told him how to find your post.

La Cimbali has always had my attention. I almost got a tank junior off ebay a couple of weeks ago that "appeared" to be near mint and your post was the first that came to my mind when thinking about good espresso manual info on HB. The "educational material" to learn about espresso machines is definitely out there and it can only get better.
