Does HB.com have a handheld form-factor, e.g. for iPhone ?

I was wondering if the Home Barista website forum software automatically detects that it is being displayed on a handheld device, such as the iPhone ...

Evidently HB is nicely viewable on the iPhone, according to Kaelin (buzzmccowan) in HB Formatted for a small screen device? below. There are a few modifications to phpBB floating around to make it more friendly to the tiny screens, but they're in beta.

90% of the browsing I've been doing on HB in the last 5 months has been on my iPhone. I subscribed to the RSS feed through google reader on my iPhone (which just opens in the browser, not a special app just for iPhone). It doesn't show the body of the message, just the topic heading which is repeated anytime there is a reply. The nice thing is if you choose to "open original" (that is, view the post), it gives you a compressed version, still with images but compressed down, which means fast loading. Not sure if that helps you much.
Cheers,
Kaelin

I can confirm that H-B does indeed look good on an iPhone and it loads great on my 3GS. Even on the 2G network (I'm in the country with no 3g) Using it now!

FYI, the latest versions of the newsgator RSS readers (NetNewsWire for MacOS and iPhone, FeedDemon for Windows) sync with Google Reader. There are free versions (with ads) and pay-for versions (no ads) available. There is a sale ending soon for the premium version of NetNewsWire for iPod that brings the purchase price down ove 50%.

I've been using the computer versions for a while and like them. I've just downloaded the iPhone version to my iPod touch and will be testing it out.

I'm still looking for a decent method for viewing on my Nokia E71. Using the browser directly on HB is painful. I haven't sought out an RSS reader for Symbian OS yet but will post if I find a good one.

I wish there was an actual Home-Barista app that let me browse and post to the forums. That would be sweet.

I like to call it "Mobile Safari." I check the forums using it on my iPhone, and indeed occasionally make short posts, on a near-daily basis. You can bookmark HB as an icon on the iPhone as well, for quicker access.

Hi Nicholas...
I have them marked in mine (iPod Touch 2K) and while it works, it would be nice to have a forum specific version somewhat like the ones for FaceBook or Twitter which are far easier to use on the fly than going to Safari is.

When we go to motels or on other outings where there is WiFi - I tend to attend to the most easily accessible sites, and then if I have time pursue those which require more ''work'' to load, and expand the text to readable levels (if my reading glasses are present).

But you are correct, every forum I belong to is accessible via Safari...

Indeed, it would be nice; my post was intended more as a reality check. Facebook and Twitter have some serious capital behind their operations; Home-Barista is a customized layer over free phpBB bulletin board software that powers most forums. We don't have anything approaching the manpower of those companies, or the traffic to justify third parties (like the ones that make Twitter iPhone apps) writing apps for the site. It'd indeed be cool if we did, but short of the phpBB people writing a generic phpBB app for the iPhone (which seems to have already been done for VBB?), it's not going to happen.

Heh, make sure you check out that link to the tapatalk forum client app. Looks pretty interesting. There's a free read-only version of the app as well. Note both of the above links are for iTunes store apps. I don't know if they'll work if you don't have iTunes.

Yes, an app for phpBB is what I was eluding to. There's something called soapbox in the app store but it's only good for a few specific forums. I have used safari but a dedicated app would be so great!
