Does HB.com have a handheld form-factor, e.g. for iPhone ? - Page 2

There was an add-on for phpbb 2.0 that provided access to the board as a web service (http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpbb-web-api/). Unfortunately, it only exposed a limited set of functionality and 2.0 is dead. There are a pile of add-ons that provide RSS and ATOM feeds, but that's only useful for reading recent posts, not browsing by topic or posting. I don't see anything that really does what would be needed, but I'm certainly no phpbb expert; when someone talks about PHP, I get the same look on my face as I do when someone talks about instant coffee.

If there is an add-on (or someone builds one) to expose a more complete set of functions for reading and posting, it would be quite easy to build an iPhone app around it. (I didn't just volunteer to do write the iPhone app, did I? I already have two semi-active iPhone development projects.)

Obligatory old man complaint: Of course, one could also just make phpbb do something crazy like implement NNTP, a protocol designed to allow various applications running on client systems to efficiently browse a shared repository of messages divided up into groups and threads. It's the sort of crazy thing we did 20 years ago before someone decided to do it the hard way by putting a browser in the way and calling newsgroups "forums." :)

I rarely use my desktop anymore and rely almost exclusively on my blackberry. Any mobile app for home-barista.com in the works?

Barry, I merged your topic with this thread. Some suggestions in HB Formatted for a small screen device? may be worth considering, e.g.:

Because the RSS feeds and mini browsers do a competent job, it's hard(er) to justify the effort to render the site more mobile friendly, though I am open to suggestions (especially if they're low cost). It also doesn't help that I don't own such a device, so it's not easy to appreciate the world wide web in index card sized proportions. :|

I might be able to help, but can you guys elaborate on why you need such a thing and how you plan to use it?

I can never understand the need to browse/post in a hobby forum on the go, but that's just me, what about you?

I would read HB on the go. Sometimes when I have time to kill I am nowhere near a computer.

FWIW I have quite happily read and posted to HB using my iPhone while on holiday.

Cheers

Obviously, the level of demand doesn't warrant major work on HB or a new iPhone App. There's an app for reading forums, though, and it looks good too. Here's the link, it's free unless you want the advanced features too. I understand it requires that Dan adds something like a plugin to his phpBB installation.

I skimmed it and it's a rather lengthy script that appears to define a private protocol between the server and their iPhone app. While on the surface it seems innocent enough, I would not install a script that makes use of extensive database access unless it had passed phpBB's validation/security audit for modifications.
