Call me when the Majors come in.

I offered to be a crash test dummy for the duraniums for the major, and to buy a stock set for the other Major to compare side-by-side, but never really heard if they were going to try to go forward with getting any made.
Any word at your end?

Ok -- I bit.

They should arrive sometime this week. I'll let everyone know my opinion of them after I test them.

Me too. We've got the same machine and same grinder, so it will be interesting to compare impressions of these new burrs.

For now there are no Duraniums for the Major. If the SJ sell well they will be available.

I spoke briefly with Angelo...a nice fellow...didn't get a chance to discuss comparisons between the standard and duranium...is it most a longevity thing, or is there a proven grind quality improvement with the duranium burrs?
Thanks for responding!

Michael Teahan reports greatly increased longevity with this new burrset, as well as faster grinding speed. I'm not aware of any studies "proving" that you get better grind quality. But a different grinding speed on the same grinder almost certainly implies different grind characteristics, which may or may not be noticeable in the cup.

My "duranium" burrs arrived yesterday. I'll try to find the time to mount them on the SJ this week, and will report back on both grind speed and flavor profiles. Even under the best of conditions, taste comparisons between espresso grinders are tricky, as I found out in the TGP. These will not be the best conditions, since I only have one SJ and the current burr set is three years old. But I'll do the best I can...

I haven't removed my lower burr in nearly 2 years (I clean about every 3 weeks with Grindz, I remove all parts except lower burr, clean thoroughly, mini vac all the loose coffee and CAREFULLY re thread the top back on...
Will I have a problem removing the lower burr...ya think?

I doubt it. Put a wide blade screwdriver between the wall of the chamber housing and lower burr carrier, turning it enough to prevent the carrier from moving. Then use your other hand to remove the screws. In the unlikely event you have a problem, a gentle rap with an impact screwdriver should do it.
