Mazzer Super Jolly Duranium Burrs at GreatInfusions - Page 7

Can anyone comment on whether the Duranium burrs cause fewer grinds (than with stock burrs) to get stuck in the chute if grinding per shot? (I'm asking about the test of weighing a shot of beans before adding to the hopper, grinding to empty, and weighing how much comes out of the doser.)

Thanks!

Hi Dan - I recently received a lightly used 2 year old SJ. I did not even try the stock burrs, just replaced them with the Duranium ones during cleaning. I have only used two different blends, a local roast and Black Cat, but neither are excessively oily. Quite a few grounds remained in the chute after grinding, requiring a brush out. I don't know that on this point, you would be any better off than with stock burrs. Hope this helps.

This question aside, I am quite happy with the Duranium burrs. They grind coffee insanely fast. I put a pound of beans in the hopper, set the timer for 1 minute and walked away. When I came back I found that I had 8 double shots (about 16 g each) worth of ground coffee - about 7.5 seconds per double! I do not need the speed, I am after the taste and the grind quality improvements that may be available with these burrs, but I was impressed.

After 6 months:
I still like the Duranium in the SJ. I have had a couple stalls with a small hard bean. Are they great? I don't know but they are grinding most every day for me. They don't reduce static clumping in my doserless mod. They are easily cleaned with minute rice type ( Dry) precooked rice product. So would I buy again for another machine? Yes! Heaven knows they will probably outlast me!
YMMV

I haven't noticed any difference since installing the Duraniums in my late model SJ. The chute will still clog up by the end(15-17g) and I still have to knock them out with a chopstick. The burrs do grind fast & I have had no stalling problems since installing them about 10 days ago.

For what its worth, i enjoyed reading your posts about the Duranium burrs(i have a new Jolly so i wont be getting any new burrs for it anytime soon), anyway, my thoughts about the stalling issues:

My observations with my Faema E61 compared to my pimped out Pavoni Pro PID is that i have no problems grinding for the E61, but when i use the Pavoni i had to remove the safety screw on the Jolly to get so fine ground as the Pavoni requires, and yes i get stalls when i am grinding for the Pavoni, never for the E61.

If the Duranium burrs have sharper, straighter edges the beans could get clogged up at starting just because of that, the stock burrs might be duller/softer at the edges causing the beans to "roll over"(i am talking microscopically duller/softer here).

I installed them on a Rio SJ a while back. I noticed no difference in taste between the Duraniums and the stock burrs. Anyone have a different take?
They WERE fast, though. Real fast.

Got these in. So far, no stalling, fast performance, same clumping, but better flavor, most likely due to the difference between dull, old burrs and sharp new ones. I did notice that thought very sharp, the edges of the cutting ridges weren't machined as well as stock burrs, there were a few small, but visible to the naked eye imperfections. I bought them from Phaelon on Ebay, if that means anything.

any updates on the burrs? anyone still have stalling issues? does anyone that just bought them have stalling issues?

i am looking to get these for my used SJ instead of regular burrs, but am somewhat scared of this stalling.
