As promised, I'm working on a new idea for the drip tray cover. The goal here is:
1) to use metal stamping so that we still get rounded angles on the "bars", like on the GS/3's drip tray, so that we provided a rolling surface for water to fall off of. This approach was the #2 best on Luca's original list of different drip tray designs.
2) aesthetically, this "lid" approach is a direction that people have thought looked nicer
We'll need to see if we can manufacture punched lines that are this long and still strong. The GS/3 sticks to short punches, and its drip tray twists a lot when you lift it, but the metal is quite thin on that model drip tray. We're thinking that if we use slightly thicker metal, with a slight downward bend on each punch, that we can get away with these long rows. Besides looking nice, they avoid creating areas of standing water like the GS/3 design does.
Let me know your thoughts on this design. If people like this approach we'll start approaching manufacturers and they can tell us what's wrong with it.

I really like the look of that drip try. Might need to be quite thick to feel sturdy, but I think it would be worth it.

Just FYI, Home-Barista's resizing of the uploaded image did create anti-aliasing effects, that you can see in the mirrored image you pointed to.DJF wrote:I like the design of the reflected image..
Note that this drip tray version explicitly rounds the top of the bars, to avoid having the surface tension of water hold droplets on top.
A more realistic mirrored image is below:

Ditto. I like this drip tray cover much more than the one with welded bars. It blends in aesthetically with the overall design of the machine much better.ira wrote:I really like the look of that drip try. Might need to be quite thick to feel sturdy, but I think it would be worth it.

I like the design, too. I will be interested in seeing how it turns out in real life.

I like it too. However, that whole drip tray thing is less interesting to me than the other updates to the Beta 7 machine.
FWIW, having a DE1 on order, I'm more interested in knowing if there will ever be a hardware upgrade path from DE1 to DE1+ or if replacing the whole machine is still the only option on the table...

I know I was one of the naysayers earlier. This redesign, however, seems like a great improvement and the best of both worlds. As long as this design holds up reasonably well to the occasional dropped demitasse and throwing it in the sink every so often for a thorough cleaning, it looks like a winner to me.
Nice job satisfying the masses and our--perhaps unreasonable--requests, John!
