VAM heating element split! Danger?

I noticed this split in the element on the VAM about a week ago. I am not sure when it happened or how, but it seems to be working just fine. I am *very* concerned, as I know it is nearly impossible to get a replacement. Here are my questions:

1. Is this split repairable? How?
2. Is it dangerous to keep using this as is? What are the potential ramifications?

Thanks in advance for your expertise.

Pete

P.S. VAM = Arrarex Caravel manual lever. It is the early version of the Caravel.

sorry I don't know what the ramifications are- but it does look bad.

I feel sorry for your Vam... good luck.

Over the years I have had a few emails from Caravel owners who have had their element fail. Currently there is no easy replacement though we have seen a few options demonstrated on this forum including a hacked, doconstructed travel iron which was very nicely done. I do know that there is an element manufacturer right here in Adelaide where I live. I know they can make them to spec- but the caravel design is quite unique. There may be a possibility of having some made- I expect they would cost a bit (100$ each?). Also the Vam element is much thicker than the later Caravel ones and the mounting and elements changed over time (along with every other part of the Caravel)- and this will complicate matters no doubt...

Not familiar with the VAM, but it looks like he element is not submerged in water. if this is the case it will probably work for awhile longer before oxidization kills the filament. I also think old espresso machines should be modified to have a ground wire if they don't already have one, and that they should be plugged into GFCIs, this will make operating this old stuff much safer. In general I think old espresso enthusiasts should start looking for custom element builders, they are probably the way.

Looks very similar to my Arrarex Caravel heating element, before it went kaput. I have not found yet a replacement heating element.

Arrarex Caravel blown heating element ???

Thanks for the replies, everyone. It looks like the the ol' VAM will be out of commission for awhile. It is a bummer, too, since I just got my Pharos a few weeks ago. Now I will use the new grinder for some killer SO press pots. Always a silver lining...

Javier and others - I will try to find a way to get a replacement. When I do, I will certainly post the info. Thanks to Mr. Sorrentina Coffee for the advice; I will try to find someone here in the states to build an element to spec.

If there is anyone out there who has any leads or resources, please do share!

Why not just use an immersion heater directly in the boiler? Not ideal, but functional.

Yeah, I think that is a good temporary solution. I called an element manufacturer and got transferred a couple of times and then left a message for someone. Haven't received a call back, nor do I expect to. I will keep searching.

Update!

Looks like Watlow sells custom length bendable heating elements. Am in the process of getting a quote. If it works out, I will post pictures and description of my process. Fingers crossed...
