Strange lever rising with my La Pavoni?

Postby KnowGood on Fri Feb 19, 2010 2:57 pm

The last two days, I've done my routine as I usually do, but have come home to my lever in the "up" position. Anyone want to take a guess as to why this happening all of a sudden? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I assume you turned it off, the boiler cooled and the vacuum pulled the piston up. Or maybe it's just happy to see you?

It's a good sign. It means your seals are new and smooth. The temp/pressure inside the boiler are related, so as the temp drops the pressure does down, creating a bit of a vacuum, pulling the lever up.

It's strange how this only started happening in the last couple of days though. The only thing I did differently, that I can remember of those two days, was that I locked the basket and portafilter in place instead of leaving them on my counter. I also unscrew the fill cap a couple turns. This allows the steam to escape and the o-ring to decompress. I didn't do this one of the two days, but maybe both. Either way, this seems to be a good sign and I'll leave it at that.

Well, right. If you're unscrewing the cap the pressure is going to equalize very quickly as air can come in the same way the steam is going out, hence no suction.

Not that it matters a lot but I don't see the point in that practice. You're putting a lot more wear on the seal and the threads of the cap. I'd be worried about the cap blowing off at some point when the threads wear out.
