Steam knob too tight on La Pavoni Professional

Postby djoike on Tue Jul 05, 2011 5:39 pm

Hi everyone,

I've had my new machine for about three months, but i have previous experience from an approximately five years older machine of the same model (which does not have this issue).

When using the steam knob to adjust the steam flow i find that it is too tight to turn. The tightness requires you to take a hold of the knob with at least three fingers, and revolve it all the way you want it to go without letting go. Don't get me wrong, it isn't really tight or stuck, just tight enough to prevent you from quickly adjusting the amount of steam.

On the five years older machine it is a lot easier to adjust the steam amount, you can sort of just skip along the top of the knob and it will turn without resistance (it will not continue rotating without force being applied, which is fine).

I've tried disassembling the knob/valve to check for any adjustment possibilities, but found none obvious. If i unscrew the outer "nut" just enough to loosen it, it will completely remove the "friction" of the knob-turn (solving my issue) - however this results in leakage where the rod connected to the knob enters the outer "nut".

The reason why this is even an issue is because it is difficult to shut off the steam quickly enough when you have reached the desired milk temperature/consistency.

Does anyone have this problem as well? Maybe it's only me who sees it as a problem? A possible solution would be much appreciated.

Best regards,

try some food grade lube (dow corning or such) and find the perfect combination of "steam valve nut"
tightening versus leaking

I'm not an expert on that steam wand, but I did have to adjust mine the other day. I was having the same problem you were and it was making steaming milk a big hassle. I ended up loosening the nut every so slightly and now the knob spins freely. It's a rather small window of adjustment.

I think the previous poster's advice about some sort of food grade lubrication is probably advisable. Also, if you are getting leaking, it could suggest that the sealing valve needs attention. On mine, even with the nut backed off to where everything is very loose, I do not see any leaking when the knob is tightened down (to cut off the steam coming out of the tip).

Additionally, on my machine, as the unit heats up, the force required to turn the knob increases, so it is probably a good idea to make your adjustments with the machine hot, not when it's cold.

Hi

It seems that locking screw is screwed too tight, try unscrewing it 2-3 mm.
That helped on my LP.
