Squeaky lever

Postby espressotime on Sat Jan 29, 2011 4:59 am

Ok.My Ponte Export is squeaking on the downward stroke of the lever to let water in.
I checked the seals that looked OK.Added some Dow 111 on the seals and spring and shaft.Installed the piston but after 5 pulls or so the sound returns.
This machine is a demo of a few years old.Does anybody have an idea what could be the cause of this?

thanks

Ps The upward stroke goes without a squeak.

Have you descaled recently? That has helped the squeak for me, though if you flush too much (or too strong) descaler through the group, you will wash away the lubricant (leaving you in worse shape than before). Be very careful to fully dissolve your descaling powder before adding it to the machine, because you do not want any particles clogging the group inlet. After 5 years, you may want to consider a new set of piston seals.

A light drop of olive oil on the roller pins and piston rod might work.

Yes. The squeak could be the top of the spring rubbing on the top of the shaft. PC's tip should do it, or failing that squirting a bit of olive oil through the blowhole cured a similar problem for me.

Take that simple solution with minimal work elsewhere. No time for practical thinking. </sarcasm> :D

Jack - I completely forgot about that fix. That's definitely the first thing to try.

Told you. Olive oil. Lubing piston seals is overrated - brew water does that as long as you wait for the boiler to reach brew pressure BEFORE operating the lever.

I last lubed my seals over two years ago.
