Sama/Ponte Vecchio sight glass repair

Postby peacecup on Sun Jun 19, 2011 5:24 am

Hello,

Does anyone have a parts diagram for Sama/PV Export sight glass re-assembly? Can't seem to find one anywhere. My Sama Export is leaking a little steam from the top nut of the sight glass (I think), and I'm not sure if its missing a seal or if the glass seals are damaged.

The sight glass seemed to be firmly stuck in the brass ends - how does one loosen it without breaking the glass?

You could try contacting Ponte Vecchio directly. They have a contact page on their website: http://www.pontevecchiosrl.it/eng/index.php

If this machine is old enough to be a Sama instead of PV the seals have probably fossilized. Once I realized that I couldn't remove the glass without breaking it (You obviously can't use Visegrips, and I tried a variety of lubricants, from soap to WD-40 ), I ordered a replacement from OE. After removing the broken glass,I still had to dig out the bits of hardened seal with a nutpick.

My advice is to order a new glass along with the new seals. It doesn't cost that much, and will save time, frustration and potential damage to your young children's tender eardrums. It will also save you the extra shipping charge of ordering them separately, a lesson I learned the hard way.

Cheers,

If the nuts will come off, you just have to grasp it with your fingers and twist until it breaks free. A little propane heat can help soften the seal but take it easy around the glass. Keep all metal tools away from the glass. Once you heat the seal area a bit you then twist with you fingers only to see if it breaks free. If you can get it turning then apply some personal lubricant in the top and bottom (no pun intended) and keep twisting and pulling upward. When it starts moving you will feel progress and it will all follow from there.

Vise grips with leather pads if all else fails.

Thanks for the replies, I'll try it.

One question remains - is there a seal for the large nut on top of the sight glass tube, or only two small seals (one for each end of the glass itself?).
