Sama Export question

Postby icurays1 on Sun Jan 24, 2010 2:55 am

Hello everyone! I got a Sama Export at a junk shop over the summer and have just started playing with it. I don't really know what I'm doing but that's part of the fun, right? I haven't replaced gaskets yet, I'm not sure how to tell if I need to.

I haven't been able to find a video of an Export pulling a shot, but I have found a video of a PV Lusso, which has the same group head (as far as I know). That video lead me to an interesting question: Should my lever raise up slowly after I pull it down like the PV seems to? Mine seems to just pop back up into place. Coffee still comes like it should, although I'm sure I need to work on my overall technique (shots don't turn out stellar yet, possibly due to beans). I've tried to follow the advice in the second post of this thread: The Ponte Vecchio Export

and various other threads on the Export and general usage etc. etc.

Any ideas? Or, anyone have video of an export pulling a shot?

Thanks, and I'll try to post some pictures or a video when I get a chance!

Hi Nick,
Joe at this place:

The Good Coffee Company
(206) 622-5602
818 Post Ave
Seattle, WA 98104

Can help you. He has been importing and selling that machine forever. There are also a few people on here who have the same machine.

Good luck,
Dan

Thanks Dan, awesome! I might just pay him a visit on Monday - I'm in Seattle for the next few days. Always looking for an excuse to go to Pike place.

Here's a couple of vid's from the vaults of Jack (aka Peacecup) who has probably pulled more shots on the Export than I've scratched myself

The last vid is probably a little 'heavy' with the 3 pulls and overdosing, but it shows you the Fellini preinfusion and the 'guiding' of the lever as it snaps back up. Its important that you guide it back to around half way and not let it 'snap' back.

The beauty of the Export/Lusso (and yes, they do have the same grouphead and spring mechanism) is that they are very tolerant of grind and dose. Try the overdosed approach you see above, but then do try reduced dosing (say 12g) and with a finer grind.

Enjoy the experimentation.
