Restore Faema President or get Kees van der Westen Idrocompresso?

Postby novyan on Thu Mar 24, 2011 11:31 am

Somebody help, I got this Faema President here http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...0611184156

And the seller told me not to buy it because it's probably hard to fix especially with this boiler condition. He even offered me to cancel and would pay the auction fee himself (he is a very nice person!). The truth, I want it so bad, and I think (I hope) I can fix it.

Now that the seller offered that, I'm seriously thinking, why not getting KVDW idrocompresso. But this is a huge jump from where my original budget is. I'm in Indonesia and it cost about 7k euro, still have to think about the shipping & import tax. Now, if the taste of the coffee or the look of the machine (to me they are both beautiful, like corvette coke bottle vs Lamborghini-I still think I like the look of the corvette better but Lambo is faster though) worth the price difference, I'll go for it.

I just couldn't sleep last night thinking what to do...

Buy or not buy, Get KVDW or not getting it, buy a working faema or fix this one???? sigh...

I think for me, if funds are there, there is no question. Idrocompresso all the way. Why? It is new machine, Kees is master-craftsman and will support it during and after the warranty. You cannot go wrong with it.

On the other hand you have machine that even seller which knows condition of the machine better than you does not recommend it. It is a no brainer.

Could it be that the seller really wanted to get more for his machine, and wants you to back out of the deal?

no way!

He'll probably think he'll cancel the auction if I say yes.

He'll pay the 50 euro fee in exchange for my feedback, and he told me that he'll come to bali and hope to meet somewhere.

Btw, he told me that he has 2 and the other one is in better condition and will be on auction soon. But this is strange, the boiler is mine, but the portafilter is different...

That's what I thought, the boiler looks ok though.

As an owner of one of Kee's machines it wouldn't be a choice for me. He has blended new technology with a traditional design and he obviously loves the lever.

One really needs to love the journey as well as the destination to undertake a major restoration like that. I don't even like changing piston seals, so for me a restoration would be out of the question.

Kee's machines are great, but they still break down on occasion as all machines do. I stumbled upon an almost new (since it wasn't in the shop last time I was there) Idro in Melbourne. I asked for a shot from it but they said it was broken, despite them still steaming with it, so not really sure what was going on there. Nonetheless, Kees workmanship is excellent and after-sales support is beyond reproach - I've had parts sent to me without asking when flaws have been identified in other machines, just in case. The Kees Idro is also a stunning looking machine, particularly the Veloce bodywork.

Having said that, the Faema is a beautiful machine also and the fact thats its still around after 50 odd years is a testament to its build quality. I recently had the chance to pull apart an old President and I was very impressed with its engineering. It looks like a lot of work to restore, but I believe parts are still available through Orphan Espresso, particularly given its a later model 'e61 mould' machine. Given the condition of the mecury pressurestat I would replace that with a Sirai or the likes which would be straightforward and inexpensive. I think even with all the restoration costs, you would still save a huge amount of money (particularly in Indonesia) with the Faema, assuming you have the skills, time and equipment necessary to restore it appropriately.

As an aside for a price comparison, there is a restored 2 group President from Gimme on eBay for 8000USD.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Cheers, Chris

I believe espressoparts australia carries some of the parts I need for this machine. Australia is just a neighboring country, friends and families are there to help. I can project my biggest problem here is at the springs but if I have to change it, I've googled and found some place on the web that can take custom order for 100US$/pair. Chrome job is everywhere here, every one modding their bike to get it blink blink so that wouldn't be a problem. And the most expensive parts is the plastic panel... now, calculating the repair, I need probably another 600EUR... it made me think, can somebody hook me with this guy here:

With tax, shipping etc, I probably need about 11000EUR for KVDW idroComp to delivered to my door and half of it for a nice working president.
