hallo,
I'm new on this post
I read a lot of comments on ELEKTRA MCAL additional springs, but I read a lot less about original springs
I own a 1989 ELEKTRA
Now I decided to try to change the spring
Unfortunately my local dealer told me that available springs are for new models, not compatible with my old mcal due to a change in diameter
I should change all the group and even the piston.
Sure I won't do it!
I'm thinking about ordering spring from an online producer, such as vanel
but I'm curious about the difference between old version of the spring and the new one
if it is a diameter problem, how can be possible that piston gaskets are fully compatible while springs are not?
regards
alberto

Hi, Alberto.

Do you have the dimensions of your spring?

not yet
I have not disassembled the piston group yet
I was planning to change gaskets and spring in one of the next weekends and I thought that measures was standard
So I went to a local dealer with only the model year of my machine (1989) and he told me that available springs are for new models only and are not compatible with old ones (he told me the change in diameter applied about in 2005)
I read somewhere in this forum that old springs were a bit shorter and weaker, but nowhere I read about a change in diameter
So I thought I could mount in my old group even the new spring
He told me no
what I don't understand is that he told me that piston gaskets are the same in old and new models
how can be possible?
in any case in the next weekend I'm going to disassemble piston and to get spring diameter and length

well,
I got the spare spring
It should not be compatible with my old 1989 mcal
now I'm going to disassemble the group in order to check differences

in the meantime, i'm posting an image of the new spring

these are my measurements:
lenght: 94mm (uncompressed)
n. total coils about 7,3 (slightly more than 7)
wire diameter 4,5mm
internal diameter: 27mm
external diameter: 37,2mm

bye

If I remember correctly, mine was around 84mm when I removed (machine from 2004). If it's the same spring, probably it deforms after some use. The software I use to calculate rates says the spring should be over the fatigue limit at the displacement we use in MCAL, so that makes sense.

It would be nice to measure the pressure output of this new spring over some time, to see if it drops a little bit.

Márcio.

ok
I'm a bit late, but I just disassembled piston
I built a wooden tool inspirated to one that I saw somewhere in this forum, and it has been very easy to remove the spring
well, It is very different from the spare one
a lot shorter
these are my measurements:

lenght: 70mm (uncompressed)
n. total coils about 7,1 (slightly more than 7)
wire diameter 4,2mm
internal diameter: 25,7mm
external diameter: 34,8mm

I repeat the data of the new one I bought:
lenght: 94mm (uncompressed)
n. total coils about 7,3 (slightly more than 7)
wire diameter 4,5mm
internal diameter: 27mm
external diameter: 37,2mm

Now I don't know what I have to do

Is there anyone that has ideas of what is better to do?

Now I'm going to post some images

I checked the diameter:

the new one could fit in the group

my fear is that the new spring is too strong

I'm not sure that if I try to compress it to the lenght of the old one, there could be too much stress on the two screws at the top of the group

I dont want to break someting

I measured the lenght of the hub of the piston: it is 8,6cm long from the upper surface of the piston
The piston itself is 4,6cm long
So the overall lenght is 13,2cm

Is it shorter than the newer Elektras?

What do you think?
