Replacement gasket for La Peppina

Postby GeneHal on Tue Mar 13, 2007 4:28 pm

Can anyone suggest where I might be able to find a replacement gasket for the top plate of my La Peppina machine?
I believe the part number is 2002. Thanks in advance.

Deluxe Coffee & Pasta in Sun Valley CA apparently bought out the replacement stock of the original importers. Sergio is the person I've mostly spoken with there. I am awaiting 2 sets of gaskets from them, but they're apparently buried deep in a warehouse & their forklift was down. They are also presumably 30 or more years old, so I don't know what shape they'll be in, but as the (heat exposed) gaskets on my machine were working well until recently, I am hoping that unused gaskets should be in good shape despite their age.

(For confirmed leverheads they also have a picture of a lever rebuild they did on their website).

I am also in Newton Centre & could see if they could send 3 sets. I haven't yet gotten a price.

Also, I think that Timo888 had put together some gaskets. For awhile he was selling them on eBay, if I recall correctly. I don't know if he has any more.

None left here. Sorry.

The easiest to source are the o-rings. I found EPDM o-rings at marcorubber.com (their minimum quantity purchase varies by item).

Harder to source are the washers. The inner diameter and thickness were atypical. The cylinder one-way washer's thickness and duro are important (too supple and it can cleave to the piston face; too inflexible and it will not seal the kettle; too thin and it won't stay sealed -- I found thin nylon-reinforced EPDM washers and doubled them up).

EPDM is not rated for the high temperatures the machine generates while steaming. I let the machine run at full boil for 3 minutes and that melted the piston o-ring. A lot of heat is conducted to the cylinder. But a new FDA-rated Viton is coming on the market. If you can find it, that new Viton would have a higher heat rating as well as decent food-safety specs.

I was never able to find the grooved rims for lid and base except on cannibalized machines.

1. Piston o-ring
2. Kettle-base o-ring
3. Piston cylinder one-way valve washer
4. Group-head one-way valve washer
5. group-bell o-ring(s)

6. Grooved rim for steaming lid
7. Grooved rim for base

Timo

I like DC&P's caption for the rebuild photo: "Waking the Dead" :) Also note the following vintage spring-lever worldview: "...just enough water pressure to extract beautiful creme."

Hello whodat,!
Have him reserve a couple sets also for me, please. There are enough of the LaPepps out there that Sergio might find a brisk market for all the NOS parts! I know there a couple parts I'd like to find! There are also a couple threads running on CG about finding machines and parts.
Thanks
richard
Please PM me if you want any information about my wants and for other questions. Or how I may contact Sergio direct.

Would you post the URL to their web site Please, Google took me around the block at least twice and no URL.

Follow-up to previous post: I suspect I may be missing a (lock) washer or o-ring that would be beteen the nut on the threaded sealing pin (2006) and the cover, or between the cover and the handle. When I attempt to follow the La Pepppina instructions as to installing the cover, I do not get a seal between the cover and the sides of the water container. Here the underside of my cover:

Again, any help very much appreciated.

Hi,
you can find sets of replacement gaskets and washers for your Peppina (and other vintage machines) here:

http://www.orphanespresso.com

With those installed, my Peppina is working just perfect and has been steaming milk every morning for over a month now.

Best,
François

Merci bien, François~

Unhappily I do not believe they have the gasket I may need. I have used them in the past for other gaskets.
One contact suggested I might be able to super-glue a gasket to the underside of my cover, but I don't think I'll try that, since even when it does seal, as most everyone will acknowledge, La Peppina is hopelessly inadequate as far as steaming goes.

Thankfully, I still have my Rancilio Silvia.

Best to all,

Gene

Look on the bright side...even if you had a good lid gasket, if you were to run Peppina at boiling temperature long enough to steam milk, the group o-ring and washer, if made of EPDM, would very likely perish under the dry heat. The piston ring may perish too. Of the readily available elastomers, only Viton can withstand that much dry heat.
