Recommended seal lubrication?

Postby espressotime on Tue Dec 13, 2011 10:17 am

I'm having troubles with my seals. They're getting dry two to three month after applying some Dow 111.
Resulting in a noisy and jumpy lever.
Had the same on my PV export but at this machine it lasted a year and longer.

Does anybody know of a more suitable lube I could use for my Strega?

Hello

I actually use some "Geb graisse blanche" or white grease :

PDF here

I find it very fluid, but at the moment i didn't have any problem with it.

I know some use the Loctite for food industry, 8108 i believe, and Ascaso too have its one, i'll try it a next time ;)

I've always been curious about the safety of this stuff...wonder if there is anything natural at all that can be used.

I ask myself the same question as you, those "food safe" greases are described as safe in case of punctual contact with food, not a permanent contact with the water in our coffee ... But what alternatives do we have ? And in addition you need a product that does not attack the rubber seals :?: not easy...

Just had the Sama piston out for a new lower seal. I used a little 111, but I still think it's water that does most of the lubricating. Perhaps you have some unusual hardness or something in the water?

One thing for sure, lubing the Strega must be less of a PIA than the Sama/PonteVecchio.

zeb: right, catch-22, good lube probably not good for us...something natural...something that doesn't break down the seals...finding such a thing starts to get difficult

I suppose I need to search through the forum...there might be something in in the archives :)

...but I'm not so sure...being the water quality freak that I am...I've always thought that coffee lovers don't seem to care much about water quality (i.e. plastic storage tanks, etc etc)...I am a fusion water quality freak/coffee lover

I use Dow 111 on all the levers I restore.
