Portafilter with spring for La Pavoni Europiccola (Millennium)?

Postby elwoodjblues on Fri Sep 23, 2011 3:55 pm

Hello everyone!

I have a (millennium) La Pavoni Europiccola. Sadly, the portafilter it came with does not hold in the basket, so when knocking it to the knock box (or sink), I either burn my finger trying to hold it, or often enough the basket falls out and flies somewhere unpleasant (favorite: down the sink waste disposal).

Can I buy a portafilter body somewhere with a spring in it that'll hold the basket in? My baskets have a 51mm inside diameter.

I searched the Interwebs for a long time but wasn't able to locate one so far :-/

Btw, I am flexible as to what exactly I can buy as long as it solves this problem... it can be just the body (and I'll reuse my basket and handle, or I can get a whole new portafilter.

Thanks a lot in advance for your hints!

I recently bought a bottomless PF body for my millennium from Orphan Espresso, and was pleasantly surprised that it came with a spring.

Is it this one?

I guess 54mm would be the right size (outside diameter) for the Europiccola. That's a teeeny tiny little bit on the expensive side, but definitely an option. Thanks for the hint!

Also, did it fit your existing basket(s)?

Stupid  has it is
a new pavoni machine will come with a clip/groove in the portafilter
when we buy spare portafilter and are imported separately from the units they come without the groove for the clip
go figure why

No, the one I purchased (a month or two ago) was cheaper, body only, and I think was cut-down from a stock Pavoni part, and the basket fit perfectly.

Alas, I just now went to the OE web site and can't find it - must no longer be available. You might try sending them an e-mail in case they might still be able to sell you one. And based on Stefano's comment about replacement parts coming without the clip/groove, I may have gotten lucky with mine.

If you are handy or know of a machine shop, you might try this solution.

You have to keep checking. "Stuff" comes and goes all the time there. I purchased a "complete" PF for my new Millenium, and it was exactly like the OEM version from La Pavoni i.e., with the spring.

I was concerned with the same issue awhile back and later became comfortable with baskets easily sliding out on some other machines. Now I'm happy one way or the other. Each has its advantages. FYI I started my own discussion of this issue that may yield useful opinions here: Solved! Securing Portafilter Basket without Spring Clip
