Portafilter Caravel needed

Postby Jasper on Thu May 11, 2006 6:19 am

Hi There,

I just bought myself a Caravel Lever machine. It was pretty cheap (20 euro), but for that price the portafilter is missing, so that is what i'm looking for.
Does anyone knows where I can get one (in The Netherlands or Europe), or does anyone has specifications so that I can try other portafilters to fit this machine.
And if anyone has a good picture, this would help too!

Thanks a lott! (and can I join the club now? :D )

Jasper ,

You can't join the club because you can't pull shots yet..........  - LOL -Just couldn't resist it. welcome to H-B. Only one of us has a Caravel in their hands currently and he hasn't used his so far. I have one coming in the mail from Italy so I can maybe help you with what might or might not interchange( a few weeks yet). But we'll see. You may have the bleak- but not entirely bad prospect of using it it for a parts back up machine and getting another complete one to actually pull shots from.

good luck and welcome

If someone has the portafilter and can send it to me I will make a mold and cast it in bronze. Or it may be easier to design a simple one that can fit your machine.

I cast a portfilter for an old europiccola I bought on ebay and it is working well.

The group head looks easier to service, only if it's in the US.

Then we could make a naked portafilter for my machine :D , but I'm from The Netherlands, so this wouldn't be my first option, first try our local experts if they have anything that will fit...
Does anyone know if there online-shops where they sell 45mm portafilters, baskets, tampers etc?

And a complete different question; what kind of grinders did they use back in the 50's and 60's. Can you find these on ebay as well?

Thanks a lott!

BTW, its exactly this machine (these are pictures from a different machine on Ebay), but then the European version, with 220v, 500 watt. I will upload pictures as soon as I have them!

Since your machine comes apart so easily- you may need to tote the boiler and group / lever assembly with you to try on portafilters- if you find someone with them.

'Almost' modern style grinders have been used for many many years- See Italian ebay for examples. Since the lugs or wings on the outside edge of the portafilter vary so much from maker to maker finding the correct fit may be more difficult than just outside diameter. . I again recommend ( cheaper in the long run) that you keep your eyes open on Italian / or german ebay for another machine that can be a parts source- $80 Euro is not bad for a future parts source
