Portafilter and basket needed for Cappuccino Amore project

Postby peacecup on Sun Jan 28, 2007 6:11 pm

Hello All,

I finally found a backup lever at a good price (probably for good reason?). Its a Cappuccino Amore, round boiler type, like happytamper's original lever. It is in the mail, sans portafilter and basket. Happytamper was kind enough to provide me the following measurements, so the search is on:

To the portafilter. The inside diameter without the basket is 58 mm. The inside of the basket is slightly smaller than 58 mm.
I have a gasket that came with the machine. Size is 31mm inside diameter and 45mm outside diameter. Still have not found a supplier.

If anyone knows whether these are standard 58-mm portafilters (I hope), or if anyone has a lead on these or other parts I'd be grateful for the info.

Jack,

For YOU, in case your search has few prospects, I have a extra Standard 58mm PF that you could grind, alter, saw, hammer on to your hearts content... in hopes that it could be made to fit. Will come with a single basket as I don't have doubles to go with it. It also would come with a single spout.

So now you have a Plan "C" Good luck on A and B....

All you have to do is ask and its is on the way.

Mogo,

Those are kinds words partner, and I'll gladly take you up on it if there is any chance that it will fit. BTW, here is a photo- what could have happened to the brass on the group to cause such a color - is that simply "patina"?

I am anxiously awaiting delivery, and hoping I'll be pleasantly surprised by its condition. Somewhere on HB I remember reading about an Enrico that had been turned into a lamp. Although its dark here, I'm not in need of a lever lamp!

That was my Enrico, but I mentioned that I only 'planned' to turn in to a lamp. After careful consideration I decided that wasn't such a bright idea after all. It ended up being sold on Ebay.
I wasn't born in Texas, but got here as fast as I could!

Hey peacecup,

Congrats on your purchase. Looks like it is more than a patina issue. I would suggest trying to rub the surface and see if a copper color comes through. If so than a polishing will restore it. If not maybe a replating is necessary. I would be interested in seeing the condition of the piston when you take it apart. Hope it will be in better condition than mine was.

Good luck on the restoration.

I also reposted the images on my "Help on Cappuccino Amore" post if you would like some reference. Also, an image of the wiring would help since I have totally forgotten what attaches to what.

Hopefully you will get the machine to produce some great shots.

So Mitchell,
Will a standard 58mm PF work- albeit modified- for Jacks missing PF?

Hi Mogo,

Without actually seeing the portafilter it is hard to say but I imagine it would work fine. I compared the portafilter to the La Pavoni and they are pretty much the same except for diameter of course. Hope you have the basket for the portafilter as well.

I have about 325 single 58mm baskets- OK an estimate- maybe 8. I only have enough doubles to equip my Conti ( 2)

Sounds like a 58mm PF is somehow going to Juneau and going to meet a grinder, lathe, milling machine, rasp, Dremel to see what kind of relationship can be forged......

Jack (PC), when you get a chance- PM me with some caliper measurements:

Like max width of the PF lug slots

Width of the opening main PF body had to insert into ( non- slotted Group opening)

that may get us started- others that seem relevant

Also to test cleaning up the outside of that grouphead- Try Hot water and vinegar rubbing with 0000 steel wool.

I love the HB family - I have not even taken delivery of the machine yet, and I am close to having a portafilter! Can you imagine what it would have been like trying to get help like this even two years ago. It will be easy to find baskets, so that's not a problem.

Mitch, is the boiler on your CA real copper is it Sears copper (is that a Real poncho?)? That is, I read somewhere that the boiler was faux copper, made of something else and colored. Mine appears to be discolored in the photo, and I was wondering if it would clean up nicely or not. BTW, I had a look at your website - really fantastic!

Ta! .............ta, ta, Ta ... ta ,ta ... ta , ta ..TA TA!

I think a nice little "arpeggio" would go well with a Fellini style lever pull - or Mud shark as you coax the espress ofrom your Amore'--

No, wait change tracks( ) Dean Martin singing of course --" Thats Amore'"
