I think the basket is 45 mm? I didn't get any tamper, but once I got one that fit it helped.

Give the the old 45-mm group a little more time - the espresso just keeps getting better.

That piston "slipping" issue....definitely cured with a new set of piston seals....maybe you could get away with a complete lube of the cylinder and piston to see what happens but the slip is a seal problem.
