Ponte Vecchio Lusso makes loud pop, now won't heat up

Postby beansbats on Sun Feb 10, 2008 10:35 pm

Hello all,

I was prepping my PV Lusso two group for my morning double and Americano, and about ten minutes after the double up I heard a loud pop. I powered down the machine, relieved the pressure, and waited for it to cool. After cooling, I turned the machine back on and it will no longer heat up to the proper degree (It just gets warm to the touch). Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there a manual reset switch or a fuse I can replace?

I have only had the machine a couple of weeks, so I will be calling the vendor tomorrow.

Thank you,
Steve

A loud pop? :? It could have been the safety pressure release valve or an electrical short. Neither points to an easy fix, so calling the vendor sounds like your best bet.

There is a manual reset switch, but I agree with Dan that you'd better call the vendor. Could be the heating element went bad if its heating just a little. I think when the reset switch is flipped the machine does not get warm at all.

If the vendor does not know, call Joe at the Good Coffee Co. in Seattle, or Gene at Vanelis. Both have been working with these machines for a while.

beansbat, Do you run a voltage regulator and/or surge protector? Not sure if a voltage spike or drop could cause the problem you have experienced.

Our rural coop electric power has some significant ups and down. Not following the recommendations of my electrical subcontractor I now have at least surge protection on anything I value and line regulators on sensitive electronics.

There is a posting somewhere here at HB about someone in Great Britain that had some sort of heating element failure problems. Maybe Dan can find the posts.

They're here:

Ponte Vecchio think there could be some faulty heating elements around. They have no other explanation for my problems. My elements didn't fail with a loud pop though, as Steve describes: that sounds to me more like some overheat/low-water-level protection kicking in.

Good evening all,

Just to give you an update and thank you for your input. It was in fact a blown heating element. I just finished working with the vendor (Who was awesome) to replace the element, and things are working great! A short review of the first three shots with the new element.... One sink, one good, and one great! Sleep? Who needs it!

Time for their Pavoni to get some new seals and head back to the travel kit!

BB,

I was wondering if you had a solution yet. Who was the vendor, if you don't mind my asking, and did they give any explanation as to why the element may have gone bad? I once ran my dry for a minute, which tripped the cutoff, but I reset it and its still a good a year later.

We never really discussed what caused the failure. All I know is that when I removed the element, part of it was layered in some corrosision looking gunk and chunks. How's that for technical terms? In my case neither the thermal switch or water level switch tripped.

BTW the vendor is 1st-Line. Jim was very helpful.
