Ponte Vecchio Export Group Screen Removal

Postby Dogshot on Fri May 20, 2011 10:50 am

I have been trying with no success to remove the group-head screen from my Export. I have the machine lying on its side and I'm using a screwdriver to try to pry off the screen, but the driver keeps slipping.

Do you have to remove the group gasket to remove the screen?

I've used a paint-can opener, which is like a screwdriver with a hooked end. The screen is pressure-fitted on around a lip on the group, so be careful not to bend the tabs out too far. I've been told that applying upward pressure in the center of the screen will help open the edges, but have not needed to try that.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried the paint-can opener, but there's no way, at least not without damaging something (like my hand). Without a spare screen in-hand, I am hesitant to try to deform the centre of the screen, just in case it does not spring back into shape.

The screen fits on like a metal bottle cap—the kind that requires a bottle opener. Unlike that of the bottle cap, the metal on the screen is quite springy.

For the removal task, I use a medium sized flat-bladed screwdriver, fitting the tip in the groove of the screen, and using the group head as a fulcrum.

I just keep the machine in the normal operating position on the counter. While prying the screen down, it is important to push in with controlled force towards the center of the screen. This will keep the screwdriver in the groove. Choke up on the grip to achieve more control.

I have an extra screen on hand, but I have removed and replaced the original screen about 40-50 times, and it still works fine.

Good luck.
