Plumbing in a Bezzera Strega

Postby espressotime on Tue Jul 19, 2011 4:08 am

I'm about to plumb my Strega in.
Since water pressure is about 2-3 bars and the Strega is a Hx, would it be beneficial to put a faucet between the machine and the waterline and slow the waterflow down a bit?
Just to create a little more time for mild pre -infusion?

faucet will not lower pressure just volume. When you plumb in any appliance the usual practice is to have a cut off valve (faucet) anyhow. If your Strega needs lower line pressure (I have no clue on this) any plumbing supply store will have adjustable pressure regulators ($80 ish ?).

I agree with Patrick that a pressure regulator would be far more repeatable than futzing with a faucet employed as a "release valve". That said, according to Ken/Jim's How to Preinfuse; Extraction Pressure Redux and others' reports, 2-3 bars is a good starting point for (passive) preinfusion pressure.

did you have to mod your Strega for plumb in or is there a stock direct connect model now?

Just hook a hose up. It's all there.
Disconnect the pump and connect the cables of the tank safety switch.

Dang, that easy?

Is it just as easy to hook the tank back up?

Forgive my ignorance here, does this negate the use of the pump? No pump preinfuse, no pump sound?

Is this the modified version of the Strega that Casa Barista is selling, or a "stock" Strega? Either way, nice to hear that plumbing in can be done without much of a fuss.

On to the topic at hand, pressure regulators are fairly cheap and may prolong the life of the inner parts if your line pressure is high. Alternatively, if the pressure is too low a regulator wont fix that issue.
