Visited Probat in Emmerich (Germany) this week and dropped by at Wouters workshop in near Eindhoven. We had a great chat and made a deal: I traded off one pre production kit against some gaskets :-). That means that the kit will come with new gaskets included.

We have some issues to solve with our CNC-Lathe. That's why we have some delay. But we have one deadline we definitely can not change: World of Coffee Budapest (13-15. 06.2017),

http://www.worldofcoffee-budapest.com/ (the other one this year will be held in Seoul)

We will exhibit there and Wouter will visit us on the 13th also. An option for a chat with him about coffee/levers/sense of life :-).

During testing we've noticed that the flow rate (not during pull!!!) at open piston valve (lever lifted) is slightly lower with the kit piston. That means you had to raise the lever a bit slower for avoiding trapped air below the piston. We decided to open an additional groove on the side of the piston.

For more objective datas we dumped 0,5 l water in the boiler and timed how long it takes till the boiler gets empty at open piston valve. Original version (on the right) 45sec, kit piston 1.0 (in the middle) 55sec, kit piston 1.1 (on the left) 35 sec.

Final steps. We had some difficulties with producing the fittings. The finish line is in sight :-)

Thanks Ryan,

We are under heavy pressure. We'll have to show it at the World of Coffee exhibition next week :-).

I visited Wouter last weekend and played with the pressure kit that Wouter and Gabor had installed on one of his machines when they met lately.

And I liked it so much! In my opinion it looks better in real life than on the images. The red copper and bare looks of the manometer match the industrial design of the Strieman perfectly. I also appreciate the open design of the manometer and the lack of visual numbers.

The manometer is definitely more than just a nice gadget. It is a great learning tool and gives the user much feedback about what's going on in the proces of extraction. Although Wouter and I both got nicely centered mouse tail like extractions from the beginning to the end, our pressure profiles were quite different. Where as Wouter used a gradually declining profile from about 11 bar at the top, my profile was 7 bar flat from during the whole extraction. Of course the preinfusion and the end of the shot not included. Really interesting that two extractions that visually look the same can have completely different pressure profiles (declining from 11 bar versus 7 bar flat)!

Until now I did not know for sure how much pressure I was applying. According to my taste buds and preferences I expected it to be below 9 bars. But more surprising was the discovery that I use more or less a flat profile! I had expected it to be a declining one. I have repeated Wouter's shot style a couple of times and got it more or less in my "muscle memory". That means I can use his profile at home as well. But of course there are many way's to Rome, so I am looking forward to play with different profiles and preinfusion styles once my pressure kit arrives!

I wish Gabor (and Wouter) a nice WOC festival in Budapest and I am grateful for this beautiful marriage between Wouter's lever machine and Gabor's pressure kit!
