Hello Dave,
If it is the outer diameter of the PF it is an easy fix. Measure the diameter of the portafilter lugs/ears. Measure the inside diameter of the group opening. ½ the difference comes off each ear!
If the height, the fix takes longer and has to be tried and filed many times to get the ear/lug heights equal and at the right angle.
If you are handy, you could file off the outside of the ears/lugs yourself. Use a 6" "smooth" single cut file, and brush it off often to get the bits of chrome and brass off the file. If the tiny bits stick, use a wire or wood stick to clear them by going along the the grain of the file. Use a fine grit plastic foam nail board to polish the edges when you are done!
First cover the pf below and between the ears with a couple layers of packaging tape to protect the bowl. Then cover the top with a couple layers of packaging tape and press it against the machined edges of the basket holder opening with a wooden or plastic knife/Popsicle stick/cuticle stick.
Cover the ear with permanent magic marker. A piece of 200 wet or dry sand paper will cut through the original hard chrome finish fairly quickly.
Then re coat with magic marker and file off all the magic marker on the outside edges of the ears, taking a small amount of brass at the same time.. Then do the process again and again till the diameter is correct.
Always hold your file perpendicular to the top of the basket!!
A local machine shop might mill the pf for you on a rotary table also. I believe lino has a set up for such work to make bottomless pfs. A metal cutting lathe might work also.
A similar method is used if it is the ear height! Lock the pf with basket into the group and see where the marker rubs off the bottom. then file there. Re-apply the marker. Do it on both ears each time to get the bearing surface correct.
This is also a method of getting a portafilter to lock further into the group.
Hold your file parallel to the basket top surface.
Merry Christmas!
sincerely

PS, a cheap 6"
digital electronic calipers is really handy for this type of work! Harbor Freight usually has them at under $20. While you are at it, a .1gram scale is nice at about the same cost!
