I have recalled in post somewhere- maybe on this thread- that a Oly owner bought a factory PF and it didn't fit his machine - hence he was interested in naked PF... he is most likely trying to get his money back out of it... Interesting old style spouts they went back to

Richard loaned me the prototype bottomless portafilter and I've been trying it out the last couple days. The machining is excellent and I appreciate the novelty of a "naked" lever extraction. No evidence of significant channeling, though I have noticed the outer edges fill in first. Pulling Intelligentsia Black Cat on the Microcasa; it doesn't showcase the blend's body, but I like how it mellows out the cup.

Like a true gadget lemming I am, you can count on me to join the group buy. My only quibble is the polished brass shows water spots.

Yes, this is a bump.. But usefull information: :)
The PF handle grip mount is a 12mm x 1.75 stud, common to Cremina PF and lever and LaPavoni Levers and for all I know, many others. That means that a grip/handle from one of these will fit it.
Stock Mcal double baskets are cool in it, I use them in the Cremina everyday.
Your timing is still good as the prototype goes to the machine shop This Thursday AM. Nov. 1. Then over the weekend, The CAD (Computer Aided Design ) guru changes all to CAM (Computer Aided Machining)and the first one will be machined and tested sometime in the next two weeks.
The order will be placed next Monday ( 11-4-07) for the total amount of PFs requested.
Cheers
Richard
PS the real one is a lot nicer! Look at the photos above!

Sounds great Richard! I am looking forward to proudly using this unique and quality portafilter in the not-too-distant Future! It will look great next to my brass based LMWDP #012 tamper that I received yesterday! :D

:D It has finally happened! The "Newd" portafilters are available. :D
They work with all the baskets I have for the LaPav and the Cremina! Including Elektra MCal baskets

You must find your own handles. The Cremina handles fit fine, the LaPav Euro.. lever grip fits, and anty 12mmx1.75 handle will fit. That would be a bout $15 +shipping from a dealer.

These are the first parts and more will follow when the pictured machinist ( that's not me!) gets a break from many rush jobs. He has a one man CNC machine shop and has fit us in between major jobs, that is why the PFs are so cheap! And perhaps slower than we might wish.

We are looking to ship by Christmas. So, watch your emails and have your moneys ready to send. To save me time , It would be great if some of you contact me by email and I will return the order form to you. PFs will be shipped in the order I receive funds. Still $105 shipped to the continental US. PayPal $108. Overseas $120. USPS to all locations, insured

I will be sending an Email with an order form and address request.
The photos show only unfinished ( not yet polished PFs.)

Richard,
You have been emailed... :D Looks like the machinist runs a 'clean' shop.
I look forward to your reply.

I just receive a porta-filter from Olympia that doesn't fit. The problem appears that the tabs extend too far to fit the Cremina 67. This is their second attempt and I don't want to keep spending for the shipping cost of returning it repeatedly. Is it possible someone can modify it so it will work?
Thanks,

Hello Dave,
If it is the outer diameter of the PF it is an easy fix. Measure the diameter of the portafilter lugs/ears. Measure the inside diameter of the group opening. ½ the difference comes off each ear!
If the height, the fix takes longer and has to be tried and filed many times to get the ear/lug heights equal and at the right angle.

If you are handy, you could file off the outside of the ears/lugs yourself. Use a 6" "smooth" single cut file, and brush it off often to get the bits of chrome and brass off the file. If the tiny bits stick, use a wire or wood stick to clear them by going along the the grain of the file. Use a fine grit plastic foam nail board to polish the edges when you are done!

First cover the pf below and between the ears with a couple layers of packaging tape to protect the bowl. Then cover the top with a couple layers of packaging tape and press it against the machined edges of the basket holder opening with a wooden or plastic knife/Popsicle stick/cuticle stick.

Cover the ear with permanent magic marker. A piece of 200 wet or dry sand paper will cut through the original hard chrome finish fairly quickly.
Then re coat with magic marker and file off all the magic marker on the outside edges of the ears, taking a small amount of brass at the same time.. Then do the process again and again till the diameter is correct. Always hold your file perpendicular to the top of the basket!!
A local machine shop might mill the pf for you on a rotary table also. I believe lino has a set up for such work to make bottomless pfs. A metal cutting lathe might work also.

A similar method is used if it is the ear height! Lock the pf with basket into the group and see where the marker rubs off the bottom. then file there. Re-apply the marker. Do it on both ears each time to get the bearing surface correct.
This is also a method of getting a portafilter to lock further into the group. Hold your file parallel to the basket top surface.

Merry Christmas! :D
sincerely
richard / espressme
PS, a cheap 6" digital electronic calipers is really handy for this type of work! Harbor Freight usually has them at under $20. While you are at it, a .1gram scale is nice at about the same cost!

Early this morning as I was perusing through the Lever Espresso Machine section... I came across the thread that caused the birth of the "Penney Newd". It was a great read (or should I say re-read). 8) A lot of people had input on this one... And a great portafilter came from it.

Thanks for the ego boo!
I've been watching the 'bay and seen so many machines sold without portafilters that a few new series of unobtainium NEWDS's are now in the works.
I may need guinea pigs with ~ 51mm for Faeminas , 45mm for SAMA/PV/ Lusso, ~55mm for Maximatic/ Pasquini/Coffex/Salvatori/ and some WEGAs.
In the meantime the 49mm's are available through Orphan Espresso.
Cheers
and Happy New Year to all!
-Richard
PM me if you wish to be a guinea pig. I shall keep a list. Tell me what machine it's for!
