Need to know portafilter size for 1977 Olympia Cremina?

Postby Climb14er on Fri Jul 14, 2006 4:11 pm

I'm going to order a heavier tamper than the standard hard plastic that came with the machine but was asked the size and I didn't know.

48mm? 53mm? 58mm?

Any recommendations for a high quality tamper w/o spending a fortune? Say thirty to fifty bucks?

Thanks.

I did a 'rough' measurement and it appears as if it's 48mm. Can someone confirm?

Hi

It is a 49 mm portafilter. Most makers offer 49 mm pistons to fit. Reg Barber has an Olympia Logo tamper avaiable at 1st- Line in a variety of handle styles. There are many other excellent tampers as well. Check out the tamper roadshow thread under espresso gear for a good representative sampling. Espresso parts has a good variety of beautiful tampers as well.

Thanks for the confirm Bob! I'll check out the beta that you suggested.

The plastic tamper I have is a convex.

Do the folks here who have a Cremina recommend a flat or convex tamper?

I have flat bottom tampers that work great.

Bob, you seem to be one of my two mentors so far! I appreciate the advice. If you were in town, I'd buy you a beer or drink of your choice.

I have a plastic convex also- I still make good shots- I am signed up fro the road show - cause I needa good tamper also-
Check the roadshow out ( you do need to post a $150 deposit - since they are shipping you about $700 dollars worth of tampers!!) But it could help you see what your hand fits before you make a purchase choice based on a picture! - Hands and tampers is a shoe and -hiking boot kind of thing if you can relate.
