Hello. I have owned my Pavoni Pro (Millenium) for several years now...and love it. I recently purchased a naked portafilter with an extra filter basket.

Upon trying the new pf I have not been able to get a good shot at all.

It should be noted that all the gaskets on the Pavoni have been replaced recently without issue. I use a Mazzer Mini set to just under 1 for the grind, as it has been for years. I do lift the lever most of the way prior to clamping in the pf. I tamp and twist the shots.

Now when using the new naked pf the shot starts dripping immediately and when pulling the espresso starts to run over the side of the pf. I have no pressure when I lower the lever and the coffee shoots all over the place.

Occasionally, the coffee will not drip immediately, however once it does and I apply the lever the coffee shoots everywhere and again I only can apply half the pressure before the lever is down.

I have read several threads on the forum and initially believed the issue was choking. I increased the size of the grind to nearly a 2 on the Mazzer. This has only made the problem worse.

The confusing thing is when I switch to the old portafilter the problem stops, however both baskets (new and old) fit both portafilters so I don't believe there is a mixup with the size of the new pf.

Can anyone shed light on what's going on? I am wasting a ton of great coffee.

FWW, YMMV
Perhaps the regular portafilter slows the effect of the first drips. It certainly will protect the surroundings from sprites (? little sprays). So I would suggest a search and reading some of the many threads on leveling and tamping. The consistency would vary with a lack of attention that slips bye when using the regular PF. You are not the first nor probably the last to notice such unreasonable behavior from a simple device. Me too!.
Many Happy Pulls!

If "shoots out all over" means from the bottom of the basket, it's a problem you always have, and is only showing up with the bottomless -- this is why you bought the thing, to learn how to level and pack. If it means from the sides, over the sides of the PF, then there's a problem with the PF lip, so the basket rim is not sealing against the gasket. You can tell for certain if there's coffee on the outer sides of the naked PF.

You guys were both right and in addition I had issues with my grind setting.

I started from scratch. I adjusted the Mazzer til it choked the machine. Then backed it off twice. As luck would have it, this left the Mazzer right at the factory recommendation sticker (which I just learned about last night  ).

I then paid much more attention to dosing and leveling prior to tamping.

What came out on the third attempt was liquid gold!

I will definitely work on a better technique for leveling my shots from here on out.

Thanks for the help!

We've ALL been there. These same folks helped me tremendously when I was having trouble with my Cremina, being a noob to the lever world.
Enjoy.

Embarrassingly, I have had the Pavoni since 01 or so. I remember getting the little oil bubbles in my espresso back in the beginning. Somewhere along the way I lost the edge. I guess it was a gradual decline in quality, as it went unnoticed.

Today's espresso was AWESOME and had the little oil droplets on the outer ring of the crema. The shots tasted so good. Can't wait for tomorrow's coffee! Thanks again!
