Lubricating the Ponte Vecchio seals

Postby espressotime on Tue Jan 18, 2011 4:39 pm

Yesterday I decided to give the seals of my Export some lubing.
this time I used an old valve clamp that I use for taking out the valves from my old harley.
This worked perfectly. Had the piston out in a jiffy and back in in another jiffy.

Any chance of posting a photo of the valve clamp and part # if available?

Any issues with getting the gaskets to easily slide back into the housing?

+1 Please.

My partner figured a while back that that would be just the tool to use, but we don't own one and wasn't sure what size to buy. If you could post the size of your tool with the picture that would be great!!

I've been chomping at the bit to get those seals lubed, one of my groups has just started to shudder a tad so I stopped using that side!

Been using this clamp for over 20 years.Image

Made a bolt since the original one is too long.Put a rubber on the inside of the top to protect the chrome.
Takes 4 hands. Two to hold the clamp in place to prevent falling off and causing scratches. One hand to turn the bolt. One hand to scratch the wifes back

Putting it back in also was very easy.

it's a valve clamp for harley-davidson shovelhead engines.

The photo link did not work.

Clearly I need to buy a Harley, so I can justify buying the clamp.

Strange, I can see the photo while I am in the "post a reply" window, but not after I've posted it!

Anyway, the clamp is not unlike the C clamp I finally settled on.

My motto is still a drop of olive oil on the piston rod (and cotter pins) once in a while, and never work the lever when dry.

The last time I "went inside" the group was two years ago, and it seems to be working fine.

I recently paired the PV with some Caffe Agust - a match made in heaven.

Well I guess any valve clamp will do as long as it has the fitting dimensions. You can buy these for little at the right places .I bought mine for about 10 euro in todays currency at a swap meet .I wouldn't suggest to spend the 90 euro's a new one costs.

Did you make the forked bit at the top? Or is it really just as you use it on the hog?
