John,

What exactly do you do when bypassing this mercury pressurestat? Simply buy a modern Sirai (or the like) and wire it in? Have you sold any machines like the 75 Series San Marco? If so, what could one expect?

Cheers,
Michael

Michael,
I replace them with a Sirai which, on the machines I've done, was a straight swapover - no modification necessary. I've never run one my machines with the mercury stat so can't comment on their performance. I have read that they work pretty well and I imagine with the mercury switches they should have a long working life ( no contacts to burn out like the Sirai )

I have never seen one of the mercury pressure stats in the wild. But the artwork in the tubing bending has intrigued me with the pictures I have seen. Is this based on the pressure expansion behind the mercury with a diaphragm or is there a more direct metal expansion?

Just something I have been curious about.

You know. . . mine really just looks like a glass tube about 1/6th full of mercury with 2 wires connected to the tube through a piece of metal. From that piece of metal, there are two more wires running to my boiler to act as a relay.

Mercury is definitely a crazy cool element, being the only liquid metal at room temperature helps the cool factor.

The mercury pstat is a hybrid of sorts. It is in two parts, the mercury filled tube which is made to rock from another unit which is an expansion valve. the expansion valve reacts to the temperature of pressure and physically pushes a rod that causes the tube to tip and the mercury blob to flow away from or to the electrical contacts. The Faema mercury switch is big....about 3 inches long tube and 1/2 inch diameter but the same type of switch is used in the old honeywell thermostats but the tube is about 1/2 inch long. My Faema is a temperature switch not pressure so I would replace it with a PID if it ever goes awry.

ladalet wrote:I recently visited Cafe Doma's Roasting facility to purchase some green beans. While I was there I took these pictures of the most beautiful lever machine I have seen to date. I have also sampled some of the nectar it squeezed out of the meticulously roasted Cafe Doma Vito's Blend--"HEAVEN." This machine, or should I say work of art, is hand crafted in the Netherlands by Mirage and is called the Classic Idrocompresso. Take my word for it: pictures do violence to its beauty, or at least my photographic ability (or lack there of) does.

there's a coffee shop right near me that uses the pump version of one of these, still a beauty though, apparently thjeres a nother one though a few towns over that has the lever version, such a gorgeous piece of machinery
